Windows 10: Dell Running Windows 10 Intermittently Freezing-Unfreezing

While using this laptop, the whole thing will freeze/lock-up - I’m unable to move the mouse, if I’m typing, the cursor will freeze, ads on pages will freeze...everything comes to a stop. About 45 seconds later, everything will unfreeze/unlock and I’m good to go again. But 15-45 minutes later, it happens again. This is a reoccurring issue. I’m a full-time online student & this is REALLY starting to drive me bonkers!

If it’s needed, I can try to post a list of what troubleshooting methods I’ve tried so far. I’ve tried so many things & most would be difficult for me to recall. Mostly on account of those methods being different things I found online & were not pulled from existing knowledge &/or skillset. But I can sure try to put together a list if it would help!


I’m hoping this is a familiar issue to someone out there. Any help or advice would be unmeasurably appreciated. My sanity is at stake here!

Creating new folder causes freeze - intermittent problem


When I create a new folder on the desktop, then try to give it a name my computer freezes. Screen goes pale with a spinning circle, then after a minute or two it unfreezes - the folder is there but called 'New Folder'. I try to rename it and the same thing happens.

This is an intermittent problem, and at first I thought it just happened on the desktop, but today the same thing happened when creating a new folder in the music library. System is Windows 10 Pro x64, 2600K 8GB ram, SSD, Classic Shell, temps OK, no malware.

Any suggestions to fix this welcome. I worried that the next freeze will need a hard reset - lose any unsaved work etc.

Since installing Windows 10 my computer (desktop) freezes at Login.

I have made no changes to my computer (neither software nor hardware).

The mouse is not frozen but all the icons are frozen.

I can try starting in safe mode according to the instructions you have supplied but the problem is intermittent - sometimes it freezes, sometimes it doesnt.

Do you have any suggestions?
