Windows 10: Dell U3011 SD card reader U/S after fall creators update

I have a Dell U3011 monitor which has an SD card reader. Since I installed the fall creators update (Win10 x64 Pro), the card reader is no longer functional. I've tried multiple SD cards, and none of them show as a drive. When I look in Device Manager, under USB Controllers I see "Unknown USB device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)".

The PC is dual boot with Ubuntu, and when I boot Ubuntu the SD card reader works, so the problem is not with the hardware. Any suggestions on a fix? I use the card reader fairly frequently.

SD card reader not working after 1709 Creators update

the troubleshooter didn't find anything wrong with the SD card reader

the SD card lock was off, after rolling back to the previous version of windows the card was read just fine.

all drivers were up to date (windows has determined that the best drivers are already installed, etc)

there was no previous driver to roll back to

the device was shown in the device manager, it was not unknown

I've rolled back from the fall creators update and will wait this one out. How likely is this to get fixed on microsoft's side? I doubt fujitsu is still supporting this PC, it's pretty old.

rolling back fixes the issue, I have regained my sd card functionality. This is repeatable, I've done this about 3 times now. fall creators update keeps installing itself and that's frustrating.

 

Laptop SD Card Slot Not Working

Hello Microsoft Community,

I have been having troubles with my built in SD card reader on my laptop ever since the Fall Creators Update for Windows 10 (My laptop is a Dell Latitude E5530 if that helps). I have contacted Microsoft Support/Chat multiple times and they have not been
able to help me find a solution to this problem...

When I insert an SD card into the SD card slot, my laptop recognizes it, but when I go to open the SD card I get the following message:





The inserted SD card works on all other devices, but when I insert it into this particular laptop, it is displayed as 0/0 bytes.





I was having this same issue a few months ago, and was able to fix it by restoring my laptop to a previous version (before the Fall Creators Update). Unfortunately, one day after logging on to my laptop, the Fall Creators Update automatically began to update
and I have not been able to go back...

I have tried mostly everything that I can think of, and nothing has worked. I appreciate any help or suggestions...

Uninstall the "unknown USB Device" in the Device Manager, then restart the PC and see if that fixes it. Many times with devices such as this the uninstall and reboot will fix it.

One possibility, that I've seen commented on, is that some older hardware will no longer be supported. Dell only notes support up to Win 7 for the card reader which could be an issue. May not apply to this but something to consider.
