Windows 10: Deploy Windows 10 SSUs and LCUs together with one cumulative update

You can now deploy the December 2020 latest cumulative update (LCU) and servicing stack update (SSU) together via our new one cumulative update package, or separately.

On September 9th, 2020, I announced the work in progress to simplify on premises deployments of servicing stack updates. Today, I am excited to announce that you can take advantage of this new capability using Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) and the Windows Insider Program for Business.

We have released the December 2020 LCU and the December 2020 SSU to WSUS in two ways for devices running Windows 10, version 2004 and later: to the typical Security Updates category and to the Windows Insider Pre-Release category.

To deploy the cumulative update and servicing stack update separately, no special action is needed. Just ensure, as always, that you deploy the SSU prior to deploying the LCU so that both updates install successfully on the device.

To deploy the LCU and SSU together using the new one cumulative update package, simply follow three easy steps.

Note: Before completing the steps below, ensure that you have installed the September 2020 SSU on the targeted devices.

Step 1: Sync the Windows Insider Pre-Release category

In the WSUS console, from Products and Classifications, select Windows Insider Pre-Release Product and Upgrades. Sync WSUS.

In Microsoft Endpoint Manager Configuration Manager, navigate to the Products tab of
Software Update Point Component Properties and select Windows Insider Pre-Release. Select OK to confirm this selection.

Step 2: Select the OS version

From the list of All Updates, select the cumulative update for the version of Windows 10 running on the device(s) that will receive the update. Currently, this would be either of the following:

2020-12 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 2004

2020-12 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 20H2

Step 3: Deploy the update

Deploy the update to the desired devices in your organization the same way you would deploy any other monthly cumulative update.

Note: When you deploy the update package to your devices, the client will automatically orchestrate the proper ordering of installation to ensure the SSU and LCU are both applied correctly on the device. This will be the exact same content as if you had deployed the December 2020 LCU and SSU separately.

Check your preferred method of reporting and note that your devices are now running the December LCU (KB4592438) and SSU (KB4593175).

Thatâs it! Itâs that simple.

The best part? Like all preview builds published to commercial devices in the Release Preview Channel and to the WSUS Windows Insider Pre-Release category, testing out this new deployment technology for LCUs and SSUs from WSUS is fully supported.

What is LCU / SSU

Hi K. Wester-Ebbinghaus,

I have to make some amendments on Ralph Sta's post above. Servicing
is the name of configuring Windows updates or Windows features (installing, removing updates/features).
Servicing Stacking Update (SSU) are small patches or changes in the Windows Update components that are required to ensure that the update process goes smoothly.

Latest Cumulative Updates (LCU) are quality improvements, fixes for known issues. As of this writing, the latest Cumulative Update for Windows build 1709 is

KB4093112 (OS Build 16299.371) and you are required to install the SSU
KB4099989. This Update for the SSU will make stability improvements for the Windows 10, version 1709 servicing stack.

Answering your question on the validity of a certain SSU after several months. As required by the LCU, you are still required to install the associated SSU to ensure that you won't have issues on the upgrade process later.

Oh thanks, is it possible not to use these abbreviations on the website?

Another question in this regard. It states that you have to install the SSU before the LCU, but does the LCU include this SSU, and for the next months will this SSU be valid to install before the next LCU because I have missed it in March or April?

Deploying Windows 10 servicing stack updates (SSUs) just got easier

We have heard your feedback and are taking action to provide a more seamless experience for those managing monthly updates on-premises.

To keep devices up to date, IT administrators who manage devices using on-premises methods must select and deploy the correct servicing stack update (SSU) with the latest cumulative update (LCU). In some cases, a specific version of the SSU must already be installed in order to install the latest LCU. If the device in question does not have the required SSU already installed, the LCU will fail to install.

This scenario can be confusing for two reasons. First, it doesn't occur every month. Second, the error message that the LCU failure can produce, "update isn't applicable," doesn't make the root cause immediately apparent. As a result, having an LCU fail to install can be confusing and frustrating for the end user and IT admin alike, but can also hurt security compliance.

With the Windows Update experience where the SSU and LCU are deployed together to the device. The update stack automatically orchestrates the installation, so both are applied correctly.

Our goal is for all IT administrators, whether managing devices on-premises or from the cloud, to experience the simplicity of having a single cumulative monthly update to deploy that includes the month’s cumulative fixes and the appropriate servicing stack updates for that month, if applicable.

Our upcoming changes will ensure that the SSU and LCU are provided together under a single payload to both Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) and Microsoft Catalog.

If you use management tools backed by WSUS, such as the Configuration Manager, you will have to select and deploy the monthly cumulative update. The latest SSU will automatically be applied correctly. If you acquire and apply Dynamic Update packages to existing Windows 10 images prior to deployment, the latest SSU will no longer be available as a separate package in the Microsoft Catalog. If your process requires the SSU, you’ll simply use the new combined SSU and LCU package.

Things you will no longer need to worry about

Searching for both the SSU and LCU KB articles. All release notes and file information for monthly cumulative updates, including those related to the servicing stack, will be in a single KB article!

Determining if this month's LCU has a dependency on a specific SSU version or newer and ensuring that the right SSU and LCU are deployed and installed in the correct order. The SSU and LCU will be packaged together, and the client will orchestrate the installation. Select the monthly cumulative update you want to deploy, and we will take care of the rest!

End users confused at seeing multiple servicing releases in a month. The Window Update Settings and History pages will now look the same as it does for those who update from the cloud today!

How to take advantage of these innovations

To move forward with receiving a single monthly cumulative update package containing the SSU and LCU, you will first need to broadly deploy the September 2020 SSU or any later SSU on all Windows 10, version 2004 devices in your organization.

While these changes are not yet live for any in-market version of Windows, we hope you are excited about what is coming. This announcement gives you plenty of time to prepare for the upcoming changes and deploy the September 2020 SSU and LCU broadly across your organization.
