Windows 10: Desktop icon grid spacing suddenly changed size Windows 10

I was working with my folders, right-clicked on one of the files and chose "Properties" to look at the date of the file.Windows gave the spinning circle, hesitated, and bam, my folders were all closed.I went back to the desktop to reopen the folders I'd been using and discovered to my horror that the icon grid has entirely changed. The new grid is awful. It used to space the icons pretty close together though not too close both vertically and horizontally. Now they're all screwed up. The spacing is very tall though oddly the space around the icons themselves when highlighted is only showing

Although my monitor has a 1366 x 768 resolution, I can only get 5 icons vertically on the desktop in Windows 10.

In Windows 8 I had 8 icons on the same screen.

Making the icons smaller does not change anything, it only makes the icons smaller and the spacing between the icons larger, and I still get ony 5 icons.

I found some answers about changing the grid spacing on Windows 7, but according to that thread, in Windows 8 this possibility was gone. How about Windows 10: is it in anyway possible to change the grid-size or the spacing between the icons, without having
to change to "non-automatically allign"

so...on Win 7 I could use my whole screen.
I could have a window open almost full screen, but still see my bottom row of icons.
on Win 10 I have about 60pixels of wasted screen real estate where it won't let me put icons

I'd like to get rid of the stupid gaps between icons, too, if possible.

how do I fix this?





please do not suggest CTRL+scroll, that is not what I'm talking about.

I'm not sure if this will address the unusable space on my screen (seems like the grid is just aligned badly for the resolution), but once I'm able to reboot I'll see if that did anything more than bunch them up.
