Windows 10: Desktop Icons always broken in a several different ways. Looking for a permanent fix.

1. First scenario is image icons on desktop lose their thumbnail previews. 2. Second scenario is upon restart or bootup, icons rearrange themselves despite my "auto arrange icons" setting being unchecked. They will be scattered in a random way that they weren't previously, with some moving over to my 2nd monitor as well. 3. Third scenario is upon restart or bootup, icons space themselves out evenly across the entire monitor, taking up big rectangle type positions. Also in this scenario, when you click to drag a file into another folder, either from the desktop or a file from any other folder,

Remove Linux Desktop Icons

I am not sure whether this will work (Ubuntu does not have icons like that on the desktop by default), but I suggest opening the trash bin and sweeping the icons into the window showing the trash bin.

 

Cannot change desktop icon

Sometimes a desktop icon changes from what it was to a plain white folder. Might be something I did but not sure what.

To change it to the icon I want, I go:

1. Rt-click icon > Properties > Change icon
2. I select the icon I want from the thumbnails of icons.
3. Click OK
4. Click Apply

But the icon does not change. It just stays looking like a white folder.
HOWEVER, if I pin the icon to the taskbar, the icon on the taskbar does look like the icon I selected in step-2. So the change is registered with Win10 but the icon on the desktop just doesn't change.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

• Does the issue still the same when using another mouse? How about using your mouse on another computer?
• Is it also possible to send us a screenshot when the white square box appears after you double click the desktop icon?

Refer these steps:

• Press Windows key +X, select Control panel
• Change the view by option on the top right to Large icons
• Click on troubleshooting and click on the view all option on the left panel
• Run the Hardware and devices troubleshooter
