Windows 10: Desktop Icons Arrangement for different Displays

Hello Community,


I am using following setup:

Surface Pro 5th Gen

Intel Core i7 @ 2.5 GHz

16 GB Ram

64-Bit

512 GB Storage

Windows 10 Pro


Workspace 1 home office: Connected to 2nd Display via Surface Dock 2 only show on Display 2

Workspace 2 school office: Connected to 2nd Display via Mini Display Port only show on Display 2

Workspace 3 Classroom: Only Surface Pro


Situation:

I am a schoolteacher and I spend my time equally in 3 different workspaces see above. Every time I connect my Surface Pro to the different workplaces, my Desktop Icons will be arranged differently, and I need to rearrange them to the specific display I am using.


Explained more simply:

I work from Home, disconnect my Surface --> Desktop Icons need to be rearranged on Surface Display

I finish teaching and I connect to my school office --> Desktop Icons need to be rearranged on school office display

I go home and connect to my home office --> Desktop Icons need to be rearranged on home office display


Is there a way to have Windows recognize the display I am connecting to, and have an Icons Arrangement Profile set up specifically to every display?


Just to clarify I am not having any trouble with what display is being used as my main screen or what screen they are showing up on. I do not want to extend the displays; I only want to use a bigger display when in an office without spending 5 min rearranging the Icons.

desktop icon arrangement

Kindly further elaborate your concern, to assist you better.

In the meantime, you may follow the step below to see if this would address your concern:

• Right-click on your desktop > Click View.

Note: If you want to manually arrange your desktop icons uncheck Auto arrange icons
then drag your icons depending on where you want to place them on your desktop. If you want your icons to be aligned to the grid, check
Align icons to grid.

Let us know what happens after.

 

auto arrange icon desktop , why ?

I would suggest you to try the steps and check if it helps.

a) Right click on Desktop.

b) Click on View.

c) Uncheck both "Arrange icons to grid" and "Auto arrange icons".

d) Restart the computer and check if it helps.

 

Desktop Icons Won't Stay Put

As per the issue description I understand that you are facing issues with desktop icons.

I suggest you try the following step in order to arrange the icons.

• Right click on the desktop.
• Click on view
• Check the option auto arrange icons.
