Windows 10: Desktop icons disappeared with 2nd monitor, Windows 10

I have read the many posts with similar issues, but none of the recommendations are working for me. I've checked the show icons option, auto arrange, all of that.


I have a Dell laptop with Windows 10. Yesterday I bought a new Dell monitor and attached it with a VGA cable. Doing this did rearrange my icons but they were still there. Then, I opened Google Chrome. Each time I did this it automatically shifted which screen held my main display. Why would a web browser mess with my display settings?? But the real issue is, after trying to figure out that issue by changing the main display back a few times, I realized that all of my desktop icons had completely disappeared from my screen. They are still in the Desktop folder on Windows Explorer so they weren't deleted, just not visible. After reading all of the other similar issues people have had with desktop icons for years, I'm surprised that this continues to be an issue. Any advice? It is a work laptop and I'd rather not do any drastic changes to it to try and fix.

Windows 10 desktop icons not in order

In ccleaner, did you uncheck cleaning the icon cache... have not used in a while; however, I think that is what the option is called.

Now, if you are setting the icons and they move after you have set the settings and not changed them... you may have the "Random Windows 10 Icon movement problem".
Some people have this and some don't.

windows 10 creators build loses desktop icon overlays on 2nd monitor

I have 2 monitors.

After upgrading to windows 10 creators build the icon overlay for shortcuts on my desktop are missing from the 2nd screen.

If I move a shortcut from the 1st monitor to the 2nd it still shows the overlay, after I press F5 it loses the overlay, moving it back to the 1st restores the overlay.

• Are you referring to the desktop icons?
• When did the icons disappear? Did you make any changes to the system Settings?

It's possible that your device is in Tablet mode. I suggest you to turn it off and check if the icons appear. To do so, select the
Action center icon on the taskbar (the little message box next to the date and time), and then select
Tablet mode to turn it on or off.
