Windows 10: Desktop Icons keep scrambling after unplugging second display.

I setup my Icons with my second display unplugged. I plug it in, the icons have a different arrangement. So i set it up the same way.And after i unplug the second display, my Icons are scrambled.

Desktop icons scattering after connecting secondary display

Okay, so, I've had my laptop for almost a year now,

For the first roughly 8 months when i plug in a display, all of my desktop icons stayed in place, on my main laptop screen. (I plug in and detach a monitor all the time, probably at the least once daily, none of the icons ever moved whatsoever)

For the last couple months when i plug in a display all of my desktop icons shift and look scrambled, thrown across both my laptop screen and the plugged in display, And when i unplug the display, all of my icons go back to normal.

When i try to rearrange icons when a display is plugged in, they'll stay for probably 5 mins, then snap back to their scrambled state.

So to summarize my question:

How do i stop my desktop icons from scrambling when i plug in a display?

(both my laptop screen and external display are 1920 x 1080. if anyone needs any more info, just ask.)

Hi,

Thank-you so much for your patience Mick,

*Dock PC

*Unplug the HDMI cable cable from the back of display 2 (where the icons undesirably go to)

*Undock PC

*Dock PC

*Plug display 2 back in

After doing these 5 steps, your desktop icons will now stay on display 1, which you will set as your primary display when docked.

windows scrambles desktop icons

This problem has been alive and well for at least 20 years and Microsoft can't fix it. Every version of Win I've used has had the problem. NOTHING works to keep icons from scrambling. Maybe the "fix" is there with DesktopOK, but it's not really a fix, it's a hack. I'm further convinced MS will never fix it based on the complaint herein that Win11 has the same problem. I was hoping my Win7Pro was the last version that still scrambled the desktop, but nope.
