Windows 10: Desktop icons move from 2nd monitor to main monitor after restarting, how do I keep them on...

Icons on my 2nd monitor shift to my main monitor when I log off and turn the PC off. In the Morning when I am up I start the PC to find my desktop icons have shifted to the main monitor. In Windows 10 I had an app that would automatically move the icons tot he correct monitor each tim I restarted. I have searched for this program on the net and it appears it does not work on Windows 11.My PCrocessor is 11 generation i7 water-cooled 11700K 3.6 processor Overclocked to 4.8 GHz.590-Plus ASUS Tuff Gaming motherboard.32 Gb 5733 MHz Viper memory. Graphics card is a Nvidia GTX 3060 Tuff Gaming GPU.

Desktop icons disappeared with 2nd monitor, Windows 10

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

1. Did the desktop icons disappear from both the displays when the main display was switched?

2. Which built version of Windows are you currently using?

When you setup multiple monitors, you will get options to personalize the display according to your needs, these options are:-

1. Duplicate these displays- Shows the entire desktop on both displays. The second or other monitors mirror the primary monitor.
2. Extend these displays - Stretch the desktop across the two displays. The desktop screen of your PC is extended across all the detected monitors and allows you to have a desktop screen that spans across all monitors.
   

If the display settings are set to Extend these display, all the launched application will be displayed in the monitor which has ‘Make this my main display’ option enabled under the ‘Multiple displays’
settings. The desktop icons will only be displayed on the main display.

2nd monitor

Hi Billy,

This is Wil, one of the independent advisor and an expert with Windows 10.

I understand your concern with Multiple displays.

To get your PC to recognize multiple monitors:

1. Verify that your cables are connected properly to the new monitors.

2. Select how you want the desktop to display. You can press the Windows logo key + P and select an option, or use the following steps if you need more settings options.

3. Right-click anywhere on your desktop and select Display settings to open the Display page. Your PC should automatically detect your monitors and show your desktop. If you don't see the monitors, select Detect.

4. Scroll down to Multiple displays, then select an option from the drop-down list to determine how your desktop will display across your screens. For the largest work area, select Extend desktop.

5. Select Keep changes.

6. Scroll up to Resolution and select an option. We suggest that you use the recommended resolution settings.

7. Select Keep changes.

2nd Monitor




I’m running Window 10. I have just connected a 2nd monitor. My default monitor is Eizo CS2420 resolution and needs to remain 1900x1200.

My 2nd monitor Dell U2412M is duplicating my default monitor however, the screen and icons are far too big and need to change the resolution for the 2nd screen. I have gone into Display Settings clicked on the 2nd screen
but the icon for changing resolution is faded out and can’t change settings for resolution. When I click on Detect it come up in red ‘Didn’t detect another display’
