Windows 10: Desktop icons take long time to load - 100% disk usage

Hello everyone,
This is a problem I've been having for months but only today did I get the idea to ask for help here. So as the title suggests the icons in my desktop take quite some time to load, particularly when I do a cold boot (after a restart for instance). It also seems that the start menu and action center take long to load first time around, with this once again being worse after a cold boot. My best bet is that this is caused by the HDD usage being, according to task manager, always 100 or 99 percent, and it doesn't seem to be caused by a particular process, as if I end the process "causing it", the one below takes its place.

I have tried various methods to stop this, including:
-Disabling the superfetch and Windows Search services (since it did not appear to have any effect, I re-enabled them)
-Uninstalled AVG (and yes, I am certain this is not caused by a virus as I have scanned the computer multiple times since this started)
-Changed some persmission settings for skype and changed the value of a registry key (check this article for more information https://www.drivereasy.com/knowledge...on-windows-10/

The latter has seemingly improved things a bit but disk usage still seems to be stuck at 100%. Any suggestions on how I could deal with this?

Windows 10 boots to a black screen

My Windows laptop runs on v1709 build 16299.125. After the recent feature update my laptop boots to a black screen with a mouse pointer. It becomes unresponsive for about 5 mins and after that it loads up the desktop without the icons and the taskbar with
only start,cortana,task view and action center buttons. It then again takes another 2 mins to load up the icons on desktop and taskbar.

I also noticed elavated disk usage( constantly 100 percent) for another 5 mins. Then the pc becomes snappy as before

My pc has an intel i5 5200U processor with 12 gigs of ram and 1 tb hdd.

 

High disk I/O leading computer freeze

It takes too long for windows startup and laptop always remain freeze.

The disk usage remain 100% most of the time. Whenever usage is low laptop respond good but most of the time with typical program like windows explorer the I/O usage reaches very high and usage does not immediately fall down after the program remain closed.
I tried disabling the non windows startup program but the problem still remains.

There are a few things to do:
1. Check your hard drive health
Crystal Disk Info
2. Perform a clean boot
Perform a Clean Boot in Windows 10 to Troubleshoot Software Conflicts - Windows 10 Performance Maintenance Tutorials
3. Run this malware scan (it's very quick)
ADWCleaner
If it finds anything, please post the log (C:\AdwCleaner\AdwCleaner[C1].txt)
4. Remove Dropbox if you have it installed.

1. These were the results of the HD health test:



2. I tried doing a clean boot as instructed but nothing seemed to change.
3. ADWCleaner did not find any threats.

Could this indicate that this is a hardware problem?

I hope your data is backed up?

I would get a new hard drive, make an image of the old one and transfer it to the new one (Macrium Reflect Free is a good program to use for this). And I wouldn't use the old hard drive at all until you're ready to image it. In fact, I would boot to a Macrium recovery media and do the image that way, to save the drive from unnecessary stress in the Windows OS.

Welp. Time to get a new a new hard drive I guess...

I haven't backed up my data but thankfully all I've got in this computer are steam games. I'll try creating an HD image to an external HD I've got.
