  1. Desktop PC is overheating after 202H upgrade

Hi. As the title says, I found my PC is overheating when I upgrade to Windows 10 202H version.

The first try was on October 2020 and I noted some lag in mouse movement and all the GUI after the installation and thought it had to do with the GPU. My first action was to delete all GPU drivers files and reinstall them, without success. I didn't find any related issue and couldn't solve it. After a couple of hours looking over the internet and giving myself up, I did a rollback to 2004 version and that solved the issue.

On December I tried to upgrade again and the same issue happened (same GUI lag). It was solved after doing rollback to 2004 again.

Yesterday I received a notification about version 2004 will be unsupported shortly and that I should upgrade to 202H version. I did it, but this time I noticed that, on the several reboots that the installation do, the BIOS was alarmed due to a high CPU temperature (also the CPU fan was running like crazy). After the installation, same GUI lag happened. I ran a Hardware Monitor and saw that CPU temp was between 80-95°C (176-203°F) which worried me a bit. Now I'm pretty sure the GUI lag is due the high temperatures.

I searched over Google for related issues, but couldn't find any convincing answer. I'm sure there's nothing wrong with thermal paste and also the heatsink is clean without dust as I blow it and vents regularly. Everytime, the issue starts once this upgrade is installed.

Last night I did rollback to 2004 version for the third time and CPU temperature went back on the range of ~60°C (140°F) once 202H upgrade was succesfully unistalled and the PC rebooted. I'm worried about format the main drive and doing a clean Windows installation because if the problem happens again, I won't be able to rollback to a state where the PC works properly.

Any idea what the issue could be or what to do?

    Hardware:

    MoBo: Asus ASUS P5K-E
    Processor: Core i7-4770 3.4 Ghz
    Ram: 16 GB PC2-6400
    GPU: Radeon RX 580 8GB
SSD 120 GB partition for OS.

Note: English is my second language, sorry in advance for any grammar/syntax error.

  2. Overheating while upgrading

    Hi Rayaldi,

Thank you for posting on Microsoft Community.

We appreciate your interest in Windows 10.

What is the current OS you are using for upgrading to Windows 10?

Are you experiencing overheating during upgrade process or when downloading the
    ISO file?

Are you getting any error code when upgrading through Upgrade is ready process?

    Try the following methods.

Method 1: You may first check if any process is running high. Task Manager displays the programs, processes, and services that are currently running on your computer. You can use Task Manager to monitor your computer’s performance.

To open task manager, follow these steps:

Step 1: On desktop, right-click on the
    taskbar
    , click on Task Manager.

Step 2: Click on the Processes tab and check if any processes that is running high.

If none of the process is running high then I suggest you to update the graphics card driver and check if it resolves the issue.

Method 2: Update the graphics card driver from manufacturer website and check if it helps.

Refer to the following article on Download and install drivers

How to: Install and Update Hardware Drivers in Windows 10

If the issue persists even after updating the driver, I suggest you to check whether the cooling fan is working fine. You can refer to the following steps to prevent the computer from overheating.

Method 3: Steps to try and resolve overheating issues.

Step 1: Clean air vents and check if air fan is working or not.

Step 2: Use some software, then, check if your system's fan is working at right speed.

Step 3: Do not use your notebook/laptop on a surface that block air vents.

Step 4: Thermal pads might be burnt. Try replacing them with new one.

Step 5: There might be some fault with the hardware. You can get it checked with professional expert.

Step 6: Adjust power settings to your needs. Lower energy consumption will result lower heat generation.

Step 7: Never leave operating laptop with closed lid. This always generates heat inside laptop. You may close lid only if laptop will automatically go into sleep or hibernation mode.

Step 8: You may also try installing latest software and drivers from the manufacturer website.

    Hope this helps!
