Windows 10: Desktop pc stops displaying when run game

Hello,For a few weeks now I have been having a problem where when I am running games my pc stops displaying and I can't shut it down with the power button but have to use the psu to shut it down. I've tried switching the graphics card with another one and that seemed to work but I dont get why it would stop working all of a sudden when I have been using it for over a year now. I've heard that when you can't shut your pc down your pc with the power button, its the psu's protection or something. So, I can't tell if it's the gpu problem or the psu problem. The gpu that I switched out was the 3090

How to get PC to display correct user desktop

After a windows 10 update about 14-Nov-22 my PC stopped displaying my user DESKTOP associated with ‘This PC/Windows C/Users/Graham/desktop’

It was displaying ‘C/users/TEMP/desktop’ which had a sample of my apps icons and no files.

On investigation ‘This PC/Windows C/Users/Graham/desktop’ still existed with all my apps & files, but was not displayed as the desktop.

At that time there were 3 users identified in ‘This PC>windows( C )>users’

After a google search we restored the User/Graham/desktop by making a registry change.

However, following a further update last night 14-Dec-22 the same thing has happened, but now there are 4 users in ‘This PC>windows ( C )>users’

I tried uninstalling last nights update, but it has not changed the desktop back.

2 Questions:-

1. How do I force the PC to display my desktop that is in ‘This PC/Windows C/Users/Graham/desktop’
   
2. How do I stop Windows updates causing the same issue – I cannot find any effective way to stop updates in case they cause this again.
   

I am not particularly PC savvy so any help will have to be in simple steps!



As extra info, I saved a Word file on to the ‘new’ desktop ‘This PC>Windows ( C )<TEMP.Desktop-G35B0E2/Desktop’ then looked at other desktops from Windows explorer:-

This PC/desktop shows only the new Word file

This PC>Windows( C )<users/temp/desktop only shows only a shortcut to Windows C

This PC>Windows ( C )<TEMP.Desktop-G35B0E2/desktop only shows the new Word file

This PC/Windows C/Users/Graham/desktop DOES NOT show the new Word file, but does show my normal desktop files and apps, but only as a list.

 

PC Can't Run Many Games

I understand that Games crash on your computer. I’ll certainly assist you with the issue.



However, please let us know:

1. Do you receive any error message/code when the game crash?
   
2. Are you aware of any changes made prior to this issue?
   
3. What is the make and model of the computer?
   
4. Which build version of Windows 10 is installed on the computer? Refer Which version of Windows operating system am I running?
   

Adding to the suggestions of Palcouk, please refer the steps mentioned below to update the drivers:

1. Press Windows logo key + X, and select Device Manager.
   
2. Expand Display adapters.
   
3. Right click on the display driver and select Update Drivers.
   
4. Restart the computer if prompted.

Wanting to run old games

Hi Jameson,

Welcome to Microsoft Community. Your interest in Windows 10 is much appreciated.

I would suggest you to refer the below link and check the compatibility of the game with Windows 10.

You may also try installing the game in compatibility mode.
Follow these steps to install the game software in compatibility mode and check if that helps.

        Right-click on the game setup file and click on
        ‘properties’.
        
      • 
        Click on the ‘compatibility’ tab and check the box
        ‘Run this program in compatibility mode for’ and select Windows 8 operating system from the drop down menu and proceed with the installation. Once this is done, restart the computer and check if the issue persists.
        

If the issue still persists, I would suggest you to get in touch with the game manufacturer if it’s specific to that particular game.
