Desktop Window Manager using 50% of iGPU when unplugged laptop.

Hi,I unplugged my laptop because the fans kept spinning up, and I notice a huge performance drop while watching some YouTube. So I check task manager, and DWM is using 50% of my iGPU. I have both an iGPU and a dedicated GPU. I restarted DWM, and same issue. I recently reinstalled nVidia drivers, but I don't think that caused it. I need to fix it asap, since my laptop is losing battery fast. I use Windows 11 23H2.

    :)

  2. Desktop Windows Manager Eating up igpu

I use a windows 10 machine. Recently, looking at task manager, windows desktop manager takes up 50 - 80 % of my igpu like almost every minute, causing everything else to lower to barely 2 fps. What can i do to solve this? This is very irritating and also
caused me to lose a lot of games.

Desktop Window Manager overwhelms iGPU, can I swap it to Nvidia?

So, I have a 4K TV and an ASUS TUF Gaming A15 laptop, when I plug the HDMI into my laptop to connect it to my TV so I can play some controller-based games on the couch, I see that Desktop Window Manager seems to absolutely destroy my FPS. My Nvidia GPU will be at 30% (GPU the game uses.) While my AMD iGPU will be at 60% or even higher... All just from Desktop Window Manager. Is there a way to make it not eat away at the FPS so much, or... Maybe even swap Desktop Window Manager to use the Nvidia GPU entirely? Asus support was no help.

CPU: Ryzen 5 5600H (With Radeon Graphics)
    GPU: 3050Ti

RAM: 16Gb with another 16Gb Swapfile.

I already tried going to Graphics Settings and setting both the game and Desktop Window Manager to the High Performance (Nvidia) GPU, but DWM keeps using GPU-1 (AMD iGPU), even after a reboot. Please help.

Cannot force game to use iGPU even after changing setting

Thank you very much for reaching out! As an Independent Advisor and fellow Microsoft user, I'm more than happy to assist you.

Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:

    1. Restart your computer after changing the graphics settings for the application. Sometimes the new settings don't take effect until after a restart
    2. Ensure that both your graphics drivers and Windows are fully updated. Sometimes, driver updates can resolve issues with GPU selection
    3. Check BIOS/UEFI Settings:
      • Restart your laptop and enter the BIOS/UEFI settings (usually by pressing F2 or Delete during boot).
      • Look for settings related to graphics or GPU. Ensure that the iGPU is enabled and set as the primary GPU if possible.
    4. Check if there is a setting in the Intel Graphics Command Center or Dell Power Manager software to force the use of the iGPU. Some laptop manufacturers provide utilities to override Windows' GPU selection.
    5. As a last resort, you can temporarily disable the dGPU (Intel Iris Xe MAX Graphics) from Device Manager. This will force Windows to use the iGPU, but may impact performance for GPU-accelerated applications.
If none of these steps work, there may be an issue with the GPU drivers or Windows is not properly detecting/handling the dual GPU configuration on your laptop. In that case, you may need to contact Dell support for further assistance.

Please feel free to reach out if you require any additional assistance. I'm here to help!
