Desperate - PC just crashed while playing a video and can't reboot

My Windows 10 64-bit PC just crashed about an hour ago. I was watching a video in media player classic and I clicked on the bar to skip ahead and the PC just instantly threw up a blue screen and said it needed to reboot after sending an error report. After it shut down, it could not reboot. It just says "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected device and press a key.".

I have tried rebooting several times and that's all I get. I tried to repair the PC by plugging in my Windows 10 retail USB thumb drive. After selecting the option under "advanced" to repair, it says it was unable to repair the PC.

Currently I'm running from a Linux CD to post to the forum here. The video I was playing was on a 2nd internal hard drive. I tried browsing the main Windows hard drive using Linux to see if I could access the drive, and it did - right now all my files and folders are still there. However I can't access the 2nd internal drive now in Linux - if I try to open the drive I get:

"Unable to mount...error mounting...the disk contains an unclean file system. Metadata kept in Windows cache refused to mount. Operation not permitted. The NTFS partition is in an unsafe state. Please resume + shutdown Windows fully (no hibernation or fast restarting) or mount the volume read-only, with the 'ro' mount option."

So I can't reboot Windows or repair it with the Windows install thumb drive, and I can't access the 2nd drive where the video was that I was playing.

What can I do? I should have a system restore point since I just made one this morning but the Windows thumb drive doesn't seem to let me. I selected system restore from the thumb drive and it said "To use system restore, you must specify which Windows installation to restore. Restart this computer, select an operating system, then system restore.". I don't understand what it means by this. How do I attempt system restore if I can't boot into Windows?

I've never had this happen before on my PC. It's self built. One other note that may or may not mean anything - when the Linux Mint disc first loads, the desktop gives me the message "Cinnamon is currently running without video hardware acceleration...There could be a problem with your drivers or some other issue.". I'm not sure if that's normal for loading Cinnamon from a disc or if it's a clue.

So what happened? Are my drives corrupted now? Why is my 2nd hard drive locked, and how do I fix it without losing or corrupting my files? And what can I do to get Windows to reboot? I'm lost. I have no idea what happened.

If I can get Windows to reboot it should reset the 2nd drive hopefully, and then I can run a chkdsk on it. But how do I get Windows to boot now without wiping everything and starting over?

    :)

Windows 10 Movies & TV can't play video.

So I'm getting a slightly different error than most people, mine will play a video just fine for a while but will randomly crash with the following message:

    Can't play.

Another app is using this item. To play it here, quit the other app, then try again.

    0xc101010f (0x80070323)

The problem is, there are no other application open that use video. Anyone else having this issue?

    Windows 10 PC Crashing

I have just recently been getting similar "crashes" while playing CivBE Rising Tide. Game will run fine for short period of time then my TV will lose signal from the PC. Sounds still playing as game is still running. Only fix is a reboot...

Do you have a DVD of your windows 10 system? Did you try booting into safe mode? Why can't you do repair from the thumb drive, it should be bootable?

As I mentioned I have a USB thumb drive of Windows 10. I tried using that to select "repair PC" but it said it could not repair the PC.

I cannot boot into safe mode either. It's like it doesn't even see the hard drive. But in Linux I can access the boot drive (bit not the 2nd data drive that had my video file).

  6. I would remove /disco all drives except the one with Windows 10 on it. Then try to get to safe mode.

Disconnect the drive and see if you can boot the system.
This error has to do with hybernation.
I think, if you can get into the system, you need to turn off Fast Startup and delete the hyberfile.

I have to go, but here's some reading for you:
Unable to mount Windows (NTFS) filesystem due to hibernation - Ask Ubuntu

It appears that there may be an issue with your windows boot, I know that MS said that you should never try to get into win 10 from Linux and vice versa. Your File system seems to be corrupted. If you can get into safe mode some how you may be able to run chkdsk, you can even use an old Win 7 DVD if you have one.

I've tried unplugging the 2nd (data) drive and the PC still doesn't boot. I check the BIOS and tried putting both the boot manager and the OS drive in the first boot order - either way it won't boot.

How can Windows 10 allow clicking on a different position of a video to literally destroy the OS? This is ridiculous.

But I was only using Linux after I was unable to boot Windows. I never use Linux and I am unfamiliar with it. I just use the Linux disc I made in case of an emergency like this. What would happen if I put my old Windows 7 install disc in? Will I get an option there to run chkdsk? As I mentioned the Windows 10 install thumb drive that comes in the retail box was unable to repair the PC which boggles my mind. What good is "repair PC" then?

The drive hasn't failed because I can access the files in Linux.

I am unfamiliar with Linux which is what I'm on currently to access this forum. How do I burn that file to a disc? I'm used to using imgburn in Windows but on Linux I'm lost. It's currently downloading but I don't even know where it is being written to by default. Is it being downloaded just to memory or on my boot drive somewhere? It's downloading to /mint/downloads, wherever that is.

Swap the cable on that drive maybe a issue with the cable check power cable as well, i hope that helps, drives can fail on the boot sector, but still be able to recover information, i would try swapping cable, and make sure power is fully plugged in, if that does not work then i'm afraid the drive is bad, bad sector on the boot partition will cause it to not boot.

It's not a cable issue. The PC has been fine since I built it months ago, until an hour ago when I clicked in media player classic to skip ahead in the video. The instant I clicked the progress bar I got a blue screen. Somehow that caused Windows to crash and it somehow must have corrupted something.

How can watching a video permanently corrupt the OS? I refuse to believe this can't be repaired. If so then Windows 10 is bafflingly unusable as an OS to allow itself to get corrupted from watching a video.

Why can't the Windows installer thumb drive repair itself? That's the whole point of the repair option but it seems to do nothing.
