First of all, let's start with the conclusion that the vast majority of extensions that are shelved to the EDGE or Google store are tested for security of their behavior before they are shelved. At least these extensions don't record your account name password, just that they require basic read and change permissions.

Of course, more open source extensions themselves do not have security checks to confirm its execution logic, and every year there are many users who lose their account passwords stored in their browsers due to accidentally configuring extensions from unknown sources, or even get hijacked for digital currency mining programs.

Chrome and Edge do have some extensions that can be defined to only launch when visiting a specific website, but due to community rules we can only give you a rough idea.

Overall as long as your extensions come from a reliable source, there are usually no major security issues, and today's web authors also have separate security environment scans for sensitive modules to ensure that passwords are secured in the browser at the time they are entered.
