Windows 10: Device keep changing COM Port after unplugging from Win10

Hi All I have an issue with one device Pax Technology Terminal connected to Win 10 NCR Point of Sale . after unplugging the device and connecting it the COM port number changes and every time we have to change the port number back to the correct port number for this device to work. Is there way I set this device to only get a certain COM port number every time they unplug and connect it back ?? something like setting defaults for each device type Thanks in Advance

No Message For Unplugging From USB Port

Hi James,

To assist you better, we’d like to know more information regarding your query by answering the questions below:

• What is the format of your USB Flash drive?
• Are you unplugging your USB Flash drive directly from the port or are you ejecting it by right clicking the USB device from My Computer?
• Are you able to see the Safely Remove Hardware icon on your system tray?

In the meantime, we can try to manually bring back the Safely Remove Hardware Window. To do so, you can follow the steps provided:

• Press Windows button + R to show the Run dialog box.
• Copy this command and paste it in the Run dialog box. “ rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll “
  
• Press Enter.

That will bring up the Safely Remove Hardware dialog which you can also use to stop the USB device you want to unplug. If you will close this window, the icon will restore back to the system tray.

Changing the Port settings for Serial-USB.

If you want to change the port settings, please follow the steps mentioned below:

1. Open Device manager (right click on start button
   and then on Device manager).
   
2. Then expand port (COMS & LPT).
   
3. Then right click on Prolific USB-to Serial Comm Port and then on properties.
   
4. Go to port settings and click on Advanced.
   
5. You will be able to make the changes on this screen.

USB Port Oddities


Ok, let's see it with pictures step-by-step. First right-click on the USB device and select Update driver software:





Then select Browse my computer for driver software (LAST option) :





The select Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer (LAST option) :





Then select the standard driver from the list and click next:





Click next/OK as required to complete installation. Repeat the steps for all Intel USB devices. Finally click on each USB root device and press DEL to delete it, reply YES when asked. After deleting all USB root devices restart the computer.
