Windows 10: DHCP expires every hour and causes interruptions

    DHCP expires every hour and causes interruptions


    HiI have a Sagemcom F@ST 3890 and the lease time is one hour. When it expires my internet restarts every hour. The internet connection is interrupted for some seconds. I went to the router settings and changed the DHCP lease time to 24 hours and save the settings. But for some reason, it always changes back automatically to 1 hour as soon as I exit the settings.My internet provider told me that they cannot do anything. They claim that they have set up 24 hours by default and I should ask an IT expert.Can anyone help me? Thank you very much!Diego

    DHCP lease expiring every hour

    I'd be looking at your own modem.... since that device is acting as the DHCP server for your home network. It's typically the DHCP server (the modem) that determines the lease time.... the DHCP Clients (the PCs) don't really control the lease time.

    I'd recommend that you consult the modem's webpage to see how you can control the DHCP options

    BTW: Why is this a big deal.... I can't image that a short lease would be causing you any issues...

    well, what happens is, every hour when the lease expires, my internet connection drops for a short 3-6 second window. I agree this shouldn't be much of a problem, but when you're in a gaming household and that connection drops for even a second, we all get
    kicked off our game/discord/skype etc. The modem was provided to us by our ISP, and they came out and replaced it, but we are still having the same issue, and because it was provided by them I have absolutely 0 control over any settings that will help us.
    So, you've helped me at least feel like I'm not crazy and it's most likely an issue with their service.

    KB4493509 causes 6 second IP drop at DHCP lease expiry

    I'm not sure why this problem suddenly showed up in
    KB4493509

    But one of the updates that this Cumulative Update replaces was KB4490481, and that update:

    • Addresses an issue that causes Windows to reuse an expired Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) lease if the lease expired while the OS was shutdown.

    So someone at Microsoft has been patching the DHCP code, and it looks to me like they created a new bug.
