Difficulty renaming Win 10 pc within wired network

I have one Win 10 workgroup PC suddenly not being recognised by the others - while being able to recognise them. The problem is that the desired network name (Network X, where X is my family.name) has disappeared. Unhelpfully the name is now Network 3 and has become Public rather than Private. I vividly recall that I fixed this not long ago.

I cannot use the security method, presumably because I don't have a Windows account, and have found that the Registry method falls down at the last hurdle. There is no Profiles at the end of the line which would allow me to insert the name.

I am referring to the string
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList\Profiles

I must have overcome this in the past as the correct name was previously operating.

Can anyone help me to restore the correct name and status?

    :)

  2. Wired connection. Desktop and Laptop do not list same network. Do not see other PC.

Windows 10 Pro Fall Creators, both computers.

Wired connection via hub to cable modem. Not Wi-Fi, I repeat NOT Wi-Fi!

Desktop says it's connected to Network 5. Previously said it was connected to Network 4, changed when I reset modem.

Laptop says it's connected to Network. Used to say it was connected to Network 2, changed when I reset modem.

"Renaming" network just changes the displayed name, does not change it's true name of Network 5 and Network.

    Both are private networks.

They do not see the other PC. They didn't see the other PC under the previous network names.

Homegroups operate within a network, so setting up a homegroup will do not good.

How do I get them to see the same network? THIS IS A WIRED CONNECTION! Do NOT tell me how to do this with Wi-Fi!

My Windows 10 PC cannot see my windows XP computers on the network, but XP can see the Win 10 PC

    Hi

I'm having trouble with my network since I have bought a windows 10 PC, my network consists of mainly win XP PC's, and have no problem connecting them, but windows 10 cannot see the win XP PC's on the network, but all the win XP PC's can see each other and
the new Windows 10 PC, ,

On my win XP pc(s) I can see all connected PC's (including the new win10 PC ) within the 'view workgroup computers' .. but when I look for connections from my win 10 PC within 'Network, only the actual win 10 PC shows ( none of the rest of the networked
PC's ,,, I have turned on 'Turn on network discovery' and also checked the box 'Turn on automatic setup of network connected devices' within win 10, but again no PC's show up in the network window....

I would of thought if win XP can see all the computers, it must be something wrong with the win 10 OS

    can you help?

    thanks

    Dave

Difficulty renaming Win 10 pc within wired network

I have had another go at this and this time I got the PC recognised again. Something obviously went wrong and now sanity has returned.

For some people the reason the network gets identified as a public network is because a service called Network Location Awareness starts before the lan cards start properly. If this happens again you can stop and start the service and see if that fixes it.

You will need to open a command prompt with Administrator privileges to run these commands

    To Stop Network Location Awareness:

    Code: net stop NlaSvc
To Start Network Location Awareness:

    Code: net start NlaSvc
Note: You can’t start a service if Startup type is on Disabled.

Note 2: If that works you can set network location awareness to delayed start in services.msc and hopefully fix it for good.

    Thanks, sml156.

But, as I have said, I have managed to fix this. A number of people I know who have home networks have said that the last Win 10 update affected some networks. I found that, on this network PC only, changes were certainly made to my network settings The network was renamed, sharing settings were changed, private was made public, etc. I worked through all the settings and got things back to where they were before Microsoft changed things. Strangely, none of this unrequested stuff was directed at my other network PCs. Win 10 updates have been generally benign, but one of my PCs was certainly singled out for interference this time.
