Windows 10: Digital Windows License Activation Failure After Hard Drive Change ...

Hi all, My father in-law switched over to console gaming and subsequently gave me his W10 system running an AMD Threadripper 1950X; yes, he's a pretty cool dude and I'm one grateful son-in-law. I promptly installed my own nvme m.2 in February and windows installed itself with no installation media needed. I was surprised and perplexed, but I accepted the ease of install and didn't read into it. I signed into my online Microsoft account to link the computer up with my account and promptly updated the OS to W11... Can't activate with digital license

Hi, I installed a new hard drive in my PC and can't activate my Windows 10 installation via Digital License.

I downloaded the Windows 10 installation tool and made a USB installation drive, and installed it on my new hard drive.

Logged into my account, and it won't recognize my digital license on my account for some reason.

I popped in my old hard drive to assure I do in-fact have a digital license, and sure enough it says "Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account".

I chose the "I made hardware changes to this device recently" option, and chose the device I'm using, but it still says unable to activate.

I installed Windows 10 Home, the version my digital license is registered with.

I have no idea what to do at this point, please help.

That is what I'm unsure of. Whether the device uses a Product key, or a digital-activation license. I.ve changed the hard-drive, and installed LMDE. This linked device is listed in my Microsoft account (where/when it was a Microsoft10-Pro) version.

I may have to reinstall the (Pro) hard-drive to determine its license activating routine. The account does not show any activation properties. I think it was a fresh install using Installation Media.

--Yes, it is true that you need to detach the license in the main device to transfer it without errors.--

Windows 10 digital license re-activation after HW change

Hi guys

I have a digital license of Windows 10, and needed to change the motherboard.

I linked my digital license to my Microsoft account, swapped the HW, booted my PC, and tried to re-activate Windows.

Just like it says here Reactivating Windows after a hardware change (microsoft.com)

Troubleshooting step ended up with the following:

That's the first time I change HW, and trying to re-activate my digital license.

What happened? How can I activate Windows then?
