Disable all automatic updates for certain?

I'm having to buy to a new computer soon it seems as my current one running Windows 8.1 is starting to have issues that don't seem to be able to be repaired without great cost and all I seem to find are computers with Windows 10 installed now.

However, I am on satellite internet and have 10gb/month bandwidth limit. This is my only internet access where I live and there are no other options for me here. I use desktop computers, not laptop so I can't exactly drive 20 miles to town with this and hook it up to Wi Fi somewhere....

Is there a way to completely disable any and all automatic updating on the computer completely and be 100% certain it will NOT try and sneak downloads through anyway? This will wipe out my entire internet for the whole month and I will have no internet for the rest of the billing month.

I'm not saying I won't do updates as I do have a "free time" where bandwidth is not counted against me after midnight each night for a few hours. Currently that's how I get the Windows 8.1 updates. The following Saturday after they are released I grab all available updates as soon as midnight rolls over and bandwidth is free. This is how I would prefer to do updates on a new system as well.... manually at the time of my choosing.

Is there a way to disable all updates completely so they will NOT try and download anything unless I give permission? I prefer to manually do updates due to how I have to work around my bandwidth limits. I am seeing too many posts of people saying that even setting the connection to "metered" is still causing downloading behind the scenes and most solutions are requiring you have one of the expensive versions of Windows 10 and I will likely only have Home edition that comes with whatever PC I end up with and won't have those features people are talking about editing registry and group policy and such.

As a bit of extra info, we had somebody living here temporarily through the winter and they had a laptop with Windows 10 and it caused nothing but problems for our connection. We had to restrict the person to only connecting to their computer during the "free time" because their laptop wiped out our bandwidth to the point nobody could use the internet for nearly 3 weeks during the day because we had almost none left and I don't want that. I want the computer to stay connected during the day as I work on it off and on all day long so I really need automatic updates to be able to be shut off and not try and be downloading at all in the backround.

    :)

    Vista Automatic Updating Error

    Resolution Suggestion:

    # To resolve this problem, make sure that BITS and the Automatic Updates service are started..

A simple solution but one that works in most circumstances!

    1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.

    2. In the list of services, right-click Automatic Updates, and then click Properties.

    3. In the Startup type list, click Automatic, and then click Apply.

    4. If Service status is set to Stopped, click Start, and then click OK.

    5. Right-click Background Intelligent Transfer Service, and then click Properties.

    6. In the Startup type list, click Manual, and then click Apply.

    7. If Service status is set to Stopped, click Start, and then click OK.

    Disable automatics updates

    Hi MelissaRobinson3.

My name is Douglas and I am an Independent Advisor.

I would like to help you.

You can try to disable automatic updates starting from the point that automatic updates behave like any service. Follow these steps:

    * Press the Windows + R key, type services.msc in the execution bar and press the Enter key.

    * In the list of processes locate the Windows Update and open it by clicking on it.

    * To disable it, in the General tab, look for the field "Type of start" and change it to "Disabled".

    * Restart the PC and the automatic updates will have gone down in history.

If at any time you want to activate them again, simply follow these steps again and change the startup type to "Automatic".
