How to disable automatic driver installation in Windows 10?

I have this Broadcom 802.11n Network Adapter (MacBook Pro 2011 w/ Boot Camp) whose driver I need to roll back to an earlier version for things to work properly, however Windows keeps reinstalling the newer version (when scanning for hardware changes, when rebooting etc.).

I tried the method outlined at http://windowsinstructed.com/disable...in-windows-10/ to no avail:

    • Open File Explorer and go to This PC.
    • Then click on System Properties
    • Under the Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings group, click on Change settings.
    • Click on the Hardware tab.
    • Under the the Device Installation Settings group, click on Device Installation Settings
    • Now click on No, Let me choose what to do, then select Never Install Drivers from Windows Update.
    • Click on Save Settings, a system reboot is then necessary for the changes to take effect.

    :)

  6. This is with regards to Windows Update right? I'm not doing any updates at the moment so I don't see how this is going to help.

This is to prevent the problematic driver or update from reinstalling automatically the next time Windows Updates are installed.

Although this not work, do it again:

    • Open File Explorer and go to This PC.
    • Then click on System Properties
    • Under the Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings group, click on Change settings.
    • Click on the Hardware tab.
    • Under the the Device Installation Settings group, click on Device Installation Settings
    • Now click on No, Let me choose what to do, then select Never Install Drivers from Windows Update.
    • Click on Save Settings, a system reboot is then necessary for the changes to take effect.

From driver tab choose uninstall, then check "Delete the driver software for this device". Install your driver. After restart wait for 5-10 minutes to let Silence Update to do his job, and check driver version. If there is newer than yours - roll back driver. In my case this was the solution.

After installing the driver, do not let Windows update it again, otherwise it will reinstall its own. You could do that through configuring policies as below:

Run "gpedit.msc" --> Computer Configuration --> Administrative Templates --> System --> Device Installation --> Device Installation Restrictions --> (Double Click) Prevent installation of devices that match any of these device IDs or Prevent installation of devices not described by other policy settings --> Select "Enabled" and perform the necessary changes.
    Detailed procedure:
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb530324.aspx
p.s. To allow Windows to install/update drivers for this device again, perform the above and set it back to "Not Configured".

  9. Hello and thank you for your reply!

I've done steps 1-7. I rebooted using "Disable driver signature enforcement" and installed my old driver, which has now been replaced by the new driver again. I've also restarted, but the rollback button remains unclickable.

Button is unclickable, because Silent Update is running. After that, you will be invited to restart again and then roll back.

You First install the driver that you want, then prevent Windows from changing it through the procedure.

  13. Disable automatic driver installation in Windows 10

Actually how do I run gpedit.msc? I'm on Windows 10 Home and Start => Run => gpedit.msc doesn't seem to work.

  15. Appears gpedit.msc doesn't exist in Windows 10 Home. I had to download and install it manually, but inside Administrative Templates => System there is no Device Installation (even if I run gpedit.msc as Administrator).

I guess I'm all out of luck? Must I go buy Windows 10 Pro instead?

It's so weird if I uninstall Windows' drivers and install my own, they're replaced almost immediately.
