Disable "How do you want to open this file"?

On every computer I've installed Windows 10 on (a dozen+) despite me setting all my default file types and applications, the first time a specific file type in opened, it still asks if I want to use this program. I've attached a picture of the first time I'm trying to open a MOV file.

Like I said, I've already specified that it should open with VLC, but it still asks anyways. I've tried this through Settings and Control Panel but it still doesn't work.

In the picture it does say iTunes is a new application, which I know would probably make this happen, but even without a new application being installed after setting my default file types, it still happens. Once I get through this screen it won't ever come up for MOV files again, but it will if I opened an MP4, and nearly any other file type on the computer. It doesn't usually happen with anything besides media files, but ANY picture; movie or audio file will do this (among several random others). This happens on EVERY Windows 10 I install, and I'm tired of having to keep two dozen dummy files and opening them all to disable this message on each computer. Is their a way I can prevent this message from coming up. I know if I installed another media application it would come up again, but I'm willing to even disable that if it helps. Thanks all!

I've already tried all the built-in tools to do this, but it still asks me this the first time I open any media file.

It seems there is some minor bug when setting default apps in w10 (probably due to any recent update) that throws an error message when any recently installed app try to set itself at default (chrome, some pdf readers etc).

  7. Hello ryley2637 Welcome to the Ten Forums!

As far as I have seen there is no actual option as far as going to disable that except in the general system notification settings which would impact other system popups as well. That's kind of mixed batch of things tied into one main registry key and system function seen there. And if you forget to check the box off that would continue to reappear each time you go to open a video or run a dvd!

Despite having DVDFab 9 the lastest for that player on a 10 laptop don't get confused by the name since that one is best of video files and leave the dvd movies to the VLC player since MS decided to vacate WMP! The only thing you can continue doing would be remembering to check the box off each time until the popups stop at some point.

If you just recently upgraded from a previous version of Windows the upgrade could be replaced with a clean install of 10 which would automatically end that bug. Or you could use the "Get insider builds" option to see the latest build upgrade over and correct any upgrade bug while a clean install is often the preferred route to take to get past upgrade bugs!

For receiving Insider builds the next build for you since you list the 10586 while the next follow the latest 14257 build will be coming soon enough. But you then see the watermark in the lower right corner if you elect that option. With an Insider build upgrading over what you have on now that would act just like the second upgrade to repair the first only with the newer build going on instead. It seems like a minor bug unless something else comes up from the upgrade if that is what you saw go on and not simply a bug appearing after a full clean install.

Read Option 2 part 4 in OldMike65's tutorial link. From your own screen shot, you did the right thing to select VLC under Keep using this app' but you need to check the box at the bottom for it to stick every time and change the file icon to the orange vlc cone each time you restart after an install (many Windows Updates will change the Photo or Movies & TV app, thus the popup box).

Simply do this every time the message pops or right click a file type and you'll quickly be finished for good. See my notes to your image. Good Luck

  9. Well it helps to have a screen to go with the advice for sure! *Smile But he doesn't check the box off the popup notification will only keep being seen! That is what the check box is there for!
