Windows 10: Disable UAC

With the earlier builds, I had UAC disabled in the registry( just as I do for my host machine Windows 8.0 Pro) and everything worked fine. It was in your sister forum eightforums tutorial that I learned how to disable UAC in Windows 8.

I also use Start8 and Windowblinds on both OSes. I have zero interest in Metro apps and that hideous Metro side with garish tiles. I am on a desktop and have no need for Metro apps. I had believed MS when they said Windows 10 would address the complaints with Windows 8 on desktops so that is why I decided to do the Win 10 Pro Technical Review on Hyper V virtual machine. IMO, NONE of the complaints have been addressed though.

Since I have zero interest in Metro side or using Metro apps on desktop side (I have plenty of programs and don't need any more), I am perfectly happy with Metro apps disabled due to my having disabled UAC in the registry. (I would uninstall all the Metro apps but that can't be done as I learned on Windows 8 Pro - they can be hidden but not uninstalled taking up precious space on my SSD while never used).

On the previous builds, even with UAC disabled I could access Metro side, if absolutely needed, via the Start8 Menu (just as I can on Windows 8 Pro). I can't do that in this build and the problem is not with Start8 (which has a new version for this build) but I think is because I have UAC disabled. So, I have use of desktop with this build but I cannot access Windows Updates as that is now accessible ONLY from Metro side. With UAC disabled, I am not bothered by Cortana, search in taskbar (I don't use Windows search...I use Agent Ransack which is far superior), etc. which is a relief.

So, my question is how do I keep UAC disabled yet be able to access WU if needed (or send feedback to MS since that too now is on Metro side)?

I don't want to ever be asked if I'm sure I want to run a program. The work I do involves running all sorts of programs Microsoft doesn't recognize as trusted. I can solve this problem by disabling UAC. Doing that creates other issues though since other
apps, like Cortana don't work. How can I eliminate all "Are you sure?" popups without losing any app functionality?

As soon as I have Windows 10 installed (without a password, by the way) I install "The Classic Shell" which gives me very many options to set up the Start Menu and desktop just the way I want it. Start8 does not give me all those options, and it keeps bugging me for Money. *Sad

When UAC rears it's ugly head, I just click on the option to set when UAC appears and then slide the little Slider all the way down to the bottom of the scale. Then I'm no longer bothered by UAC popping up all the time.

Then to further get past all the "Permissions" BS, I install "Grant Admin Full Control" which I call 'Take Ownership, on Steroids'.

That's just the tip of the iceberg, so to speak. I have many other Tweaks that I used on Windows 8.1 that still work just fine in Windows 10.

The answer is, you can't. This has been coming, and you should have expected it at some point. Metro is not an "optional" component, it is what Windows is transforming into.

If you don't like it, your only choice is to stay on older versions because Metro is here to stay and each new release of Windows will convert more of it to Metro. At this point, the Control Panel Windows Update app is gone. There is only a Metro version. No way to bring it back short of copying it from an older version, and that would certainly be unsupported and likely not workable.

This is not a matter of "listening to users", Win32 (ie desktop apps) is being retired as the primary API.. it won't happen with Windows 10, maybe not even the next few releases, but eventually the switch will be made.

Either get on board, or be left behind. That's really all there is to it.

Great! Thanks. Now that is fixed and I won't have any more crashes of my browsers and 10 Preview itself when it willy-nilly auto updates assuming WU works, now it is back in the Control Panel, as it did in earlier builds. It should tell me there are updates but not install them until I click to do so.

This doesn't solve my problem with UAC though. I know there are other ways to deal with UAC so I will look into them and I will ask Stardock about it also.

I should have thought that MS would just hide WU in the Control Panel rather than removing it. Removing it could happen in a later build but I seriously doubt it as there would be a large yowl from Enterprise and Microsoft needs Enterprise to be willing to upgrade.
