Windows 10: Disable Windows 10 from auto-"fixing" desktop links

    Disable Windows 10 from auto-"fixing" desktop links


    How do I disable Windows 10 from helpfully fixing broken links.


    I mean desktop links AKA shortcuts, and not Internet links nor keyboard shortcuts. The kind of thing you get when you control-drag-n-drop a file or folder somewhere else.



    Specifically, we bind a drive letter to something for development, then re-bind it to another path for a different project.


    So I drag a link to this drive letter (from whatever is My Computer in Windows 10) to the desktop and task bar for easy access.


    However, if I click it but it isn't bound to any path, Windows "fixes" it to point to what used to be bound as that drive letter. Evermore, it is tied to this, so I have to recreate the link.



    How do I tell Windows to stop fixing bad links? At the very least, I want Windows 7 behavior for drive letter links, where a non-existent binding yields a popup saying it doesn't exist, rather than "fixing" it to the absolute path of the last time it was bound to that drive.

    Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

    Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK

    Windows 10-Cancel Auto Brightness

    Kalpana, the fix you gave was windows 8. Did not work for Windows 10 which is what I'm having issues with.

    Tried that Windows 8 fix twice for Windows 10. complete fail.

    Any other suggestions?
