Windows 10: Disc C usage spikes to 100% randomly or from even one slight action on the computer

So one year ago I've bought a computer with Windows 10 Pro. It's been working fine, but I've noticed that sometimes the pc would "freeze", like apps would still function, but couldn't click anywhere. I've ignored the problem for a time, since I've also got laptop and it's more comfortable for me to work on it, even tho it had it's own set of problems.So 3 months ago I've decided to check on my pc, then I've noticed that any action I would perform, the Disc C usage would spike to 100%. It's like on my laptop, but with CPU. And I wouldn't mind it at all, since 100% CPU on laptop wasn't that bad

why is win 10 spiking my disc usage to 100%

I am having the same issue. My hard drive goes to 100% and completely freezes the computer. I tried the steps above and they did not fix the problem. I notice that the disc usage spikes to 100% whenever I open File Explorer. What can I do to fix this
problem?

Yeah i understand that downloading causes it to spike... The only problem with that is even after it cont to idle high... or when playing a game or something it will randomly spike to 100% then drop back down fast then spike again cause random hiccups int he game i will get a screenshot but i gotta download a game first i completely reinstalled windows 10. Its currently low disc usuage atm cause im not doing anything as soon as i start playing something its going to keep spiking

Thanks for getting back to me.

I started going through your list of suggestions.

I have switched off all background apps. I was horrified to see so many.

I then disabled windows update.

At that stage I thought I would check out disc usage on task manager.

Disc activity had gone down dramatically and in the performance tag activity was very low, it spiked from time to time if I did something on the PC but the speed on all activity was back to normal.

I thought I would leave things as they were and see if things stayed the same.

No problems at all until this afternoon I was trying to look at a file via windows explorer and got the message "not responding". A quick look at task manager and disc activity is 100% again. Everything slows down. I close down some screens and the desk
top turns black.

The only way I can get a display up again is "alt" + "tab". The task bar has disappeared. I decided to reboot but the only way I can do that is with the on'/off switch.

The PC reboots. I check that all the apps are still switched off and windows update is still disabled, Disc activity is still 100%.

As I type this disc activity has suddenly dropped. it keeps spiking to 100% but then reverts back to about 12%.

Is this normal or is there something else I should do.

Back to 100% now. How do I find out what is actually happening, what activity is the disc doing?

I am confused.

Any suggestions?
