Windows 10: Discarding Realtek driver for functional generic one in Win 10

The audio situation with Win 10 is a disaster that Microsoft has not dealt with effectively. It was bad enough that every so often Win 10 insisted that audio wasn't plugged in, requiring restarting Win 10, but now — having reinstalled the Realtek driver for XPS desktop that Dell supplies — that problem is gone and in its place is audio services not responding, which seemingly isn't true despite response by troubleshooter saying it is. Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builderare working. I even stopped and restarted these services, with the same result in troubleshooter of audio services not responding.


Frankly, I don't need anything more than simple left-right channel audio for my purposes in home office, but how to replace the Realtek driver with generic stereo driver? I've learned to accept the variety of problematic and basically inexcusable issues with Win 10 — such as cursor freezing, but the audio issue is utterly and completely unacceptable. This is version 1903. The 2004 update refused to go beyond 84 percent and eventually reversed itself back to 1903...which is when this current issue started. Solution please.

Hey Dj Urko, I am trying to install the realtek driver and I get the error 0x0001. I have disabled secure boot and Driver signature. I have the latest win 10 build. What am I doing wrong? Can u post the complete list of steps that I have to take? I have an asus z170 with alc1150.

I had the realtek error when using the installer, so I did these step and It Worked

1.Go Open up device manager
2. Go under sound,video, and game controllers
3. Find Realtek High Definition Audio
4. Right click and hit update driver
5. Browse my computer for driver software
6. Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer
7. Click Have Disk and hit browse
8. Click on the Realtek HD Audio mod folder and look for win64
9. Click on the HDXRT4 and click ok,
10. Click Next and Yes
After it is done, restart the PC

You should be good then and also make sure before doing these steps that you have driver enforcement disabled.
