Windows 10: Disk Defragment Always Runs at boot

I'm running windows 10. I am having issues with my disk drive usage being 100%, particularly at boot. One of the culprits is the Disk Defragment. I opened "Defragment and Optimize Drives" and I set a schedule for weekly but have since found that it still runs every time I restart. I also let it run to completion once and then did the restart and it still runs. I then override the settings using the Task Scheduler and I set it to run weekly starting tomorrow and still it runs at boot. The only thing I have found to fix this is to use Task Scheduler and completely disable the task.


I would like this task to be scheduled but it appears there is some kind of issue here. Is this known or am I missing something entirely?

Let us run Defragmentation on your hard drive. This process will organize the contents of the mass storage device used to store files. Please follow these steps on how to defrag:

• Type defrag on the search box and select Defragment and Optimize Drives.
• Select the disk drive you want to optimize.
• Click the Optimize button.

After defragging the disk drive and the issue still persist, we suggest that you reach your computer manufacturer for more troubleshooting steps to fix the issue. There might be a need to update your Bios.

hard disk D won't defragment

File corruption is one of the reasons why you are having challenges defragmenting your hard disk. Before we proceed, we need you to answer the following questions:

• Are you defragmenting an internal drive or an external drive?
• Are you using the Windows defragmenter to defrag your hard disk, or is it a third party software?

In the meantime, you can run the System File Checker tool. This will helps use scan and restore corrupted files. Here’s an

Method 1:

I would suggest you to Run maintenance task and check if it helps.

The Run maintenance task checks issues that might slow down your computer's performance, such as how many users are currently logged on to the computer and whether multiple programs are running at
the same time.



Follow the below steps:

• Right click on the Start menu.
• Select Control Panel.
• Select Troubleshooting.
• Click on Run maintenance task under
  System and Security.

Method 2:

To defragment your hard disk

• Open Disk Defragmenter by clicking the Start
  button. In the search box, type Disk Defragmenter, and then, in the list of results, click
  Disk Defragmenter.
• Under Current status, select the disk you want to defragment.
• To determine if the disk needs to be defragmented or not, click
  Analyze disk. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
• Once Windows is finished analyzing the disk, you can check the percentage of fragmentation on the disk in the
  Last Run column. If the number is above 10%, you should defragment the disk.
• Click Defragment disk. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Method 3:

If issue still persist, you can try Clean Boot and check if it helps.
