Windows 10: Disk Management help

[Ultra noob alert] Guys, I'm stuck in a pickle and really need some help to sort out this situation.

This is what happened: I wanted to install an SSD to my laptop so before doing that, I found that my previous HDD (disk 0) is an MBR partition type and I had formatted my new SSD in GPT format. I decided, that before cloning the HDD to my SSD, I should first convert MBR to GPT(don't ask me why) and without taking a backup, I used a program to do the conversion.

The program asked for a reboot to continue the process and suggested that I change the boot type to UEFI instead of BIOS. Didn't sound too complicated so I proceeded with the restart. But the laptop never turned on, it failed to find a boot device/bootloader. Restored bootloader using recovery usb drive but it failed to detect windows when I used some commands on cmd. Now instead of installing windows again on my old HDD, I decided to install windows on my new SSD to avoid losing my whole life's work. Viola! It worked. The system was able to boot and I was able to salvage my data.

Now the problem is, my bootloader/boot device or something is on disk 0 (old HDD). I think part of my HDD is being used to boot the system which I don't want. I tested it by removing the HDD and tried booting the system which failed to detect boot device.

I think, ideally everything related to boot or the whole windows for that matter should be on the new SSD. I should be able to free up all the space in my old HDD and use the SSD as the primary source of all windows related stuff.

There are a couple of other things as well which I'm considering but can't move forward until I sort this out. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Please feel free to ask any information or questions.

PS. Currently, the disk management shows that the old HDD is a GPT partition but I have serious doubts that it didn't convert properly. Not sure if I should format it completely and convert it to GPT or use it as is. Current Disk Situation

Disk management console view is not up-to-date

i dont know how to fix your disk management, but i can fix your partition problems...




open up Command Prompt with admin rights. (Right click, run as admin)


enter in
DISKPART
list disk

then find the Disk number for your Raid array... lets call it number 7 ( you can tell what disk is what by the total size)
type in

Select Disk 7
List Partition (will give you a list of all the partitions..)
Select Partition 1 (im assuming you only have 1 partition on Disk 7) repeat this step if you have more partitions.
ASSIGN


that should get the array up and running ready to use.

Hi Keith,

Thanks for providing the detail that was requested previously. Since the disk management screen that you saw is showing greyed out options, we suggest that you follow the steps below to change the partition type of your internal drive:

• Open Disk Management then right click the partition on the disk you want to covert and select Delete Volume.
• Once you complete the process you will see the whole disk shown as two separate unallocated spaces. Right-click the disk and select Convert to GPT disk.

After the conversion, you will be able to use the whole disk and then you can create new separate partitions.

dmDskmgr-vd.zip
Step 2: Double click dmDskmgr-vd.zip to open the compressed folder
Double click dmDskmgr-vd.mmc to launch the custom Disk Management console

Press Alt+PrtScn to grab a snapshot of just the Disk Management window
Open Paint and Ctrl+V to paste it, then save the image
Attach the image to a new post.
