  1. Disk Partition Only Allows 400MB?

Hello everyone, Alex Slater here! I am trying to partition my hard drive in the usual Disk Partition software, and the popup is saying I only have 492MB or so to do a shrink volume operation. What exactly am I doing wrong? I have shrunk hard drive partitions before, and it was never a problem usually. I managed to dig up somewhere that it was the total free space required for it, I'm currently at a 496GB/930GB free space. How much more is required? I was planning to do about a 150GB partition or so to test out another OS. Cheers, if anyone can figure this out!

    :)

    W7 Hard drive partition issue

to get rid of that 100 meg windows partition that setup creates for you on a new install on a blank hdd:

    - press shift+f10 when on the partition management screen in setup <-- this opens a command prompt
    - diskpart <-- start the windows command line partition management tool
    - list disk <--- list the installed hdds in this computer for the next step
    - select disk 0 <- might have to replace 0 with the number of the correct disk
    - clean <-- this will erase all data on the disk you selected one step up- dont use the wrong disk!
    - create partition primary <- creates a primary partition taking up all space on the drive, adjust the command if necessary
    - exit, exit to exit diskpart and the command prompt
    - click refresh in partition manager and select your newly created partition and install to that

  3. Disk management console view is not up-to-date

i dont know how to fix your disk management, but i can fix your partition problems...

open up Command Prompt with admin rights. (Right click, run as admin)

    enter in
    DISKPART
    list disk

then find the Disk number for your Raid array... lets call it number 7 ( you can tell what disk is what by the total size)
    type in

    Select Disk 7
List Partition (will give you a list of all the partitions..)
Select Partition 1 (im assuming you only have 1 partition on Disk 7) repeat this step if you have more partitions.
    ASSIGN

that should get the array up and running ready to use.

    EDITED.

    any problems, post back ^^

    Disk Partition Only Allows 400MB?

Idk what I'm doing with Test Disk. 256GB to 400MB

    @secretlyblue

That is too bad to believe. Did you really run a Full Scan in Partition Recovery Wizard?

Anyway, let us jettison it and move on to TestDisk.

One: For effective partition recovery, the OP should know what all and how many partitions he had on his disk.Otherwise we may have to go through with guess work and detailed investigation not to make any further injury on that crippled disk. ( The partition structure of OEM machines may be different with different manufacturers and may also be different on different models of the same manufacturer.)

Two: TestDisk is a highly potent utility. It is not for a novice. If one does not know how to use it and/or does not know what command does what, he should not use it. You made that mistake and it has already made some changes to the already crippled SSD.

You had downloaded TestDisk 7.1 which is a beta version. Are you a beta tester? *Smile.

Delete it and install the stable version 7.0 so that we are in sync in the further process to find out what all partitions you had and whether those have any recoverable data.

    • TestDisk must be executed with Administrator privileges.
    Important points for using TestDisk:

    • To navigate in TestDisk, use the Arrow and PageUp/PageDown keys.
    • To proceed, confirm your choice(s) with the Enter key.
    • To return to a previous display or quit TestDisk, use the q (Quit) key.
    • To save modifications under TestDisk, you must confirm them with the y (Yes) and/or Enter keys, and
    • To actually write partition data to the MBR, you must choose the "Write" selection and press the Enter key. (< This you will not do unless instructed by me)
    { Whether it is Partition Recovery Wizard in PW or TestDisk, only after confirming the shown/found partitions can list the files in it, one should select such partitions and give the Finish (PW) /Write (TestDisk) commands to write the correct partition table/s in Sector 0 (MBR).}

    Run testdisk_win.exe

First Screen: Highlight [No Log] and press Enter key

Second Screen: Select(Highlight) your faulty SSD, Highlight [Proceed] -if not highlighted already - and press Enter

    Third Screen: [Intel] Enter

    Fourth Screen: [Analyse] Enter

Fifth Screen: Please take a screenshot. [Quick Search] Enter

Sixth Screen: Search in progress. Take a screenshot. Allow Quick Search to complete.( On my machine it took 45 minutes) Do not stop. If you stop no harm but you have to start all over again *Smile

Seventh Screen: On completion of Quick Search take a screenshot and press Enter to continue

Eighth Screen: Take a screenshot. Highlight [Deeper Search] to find more partitions - we are not sure that the found partitions are the only partitions on the disk, neither me nor you *Smile ( but I am sure that there should have been more in your case) -

Ninth Screen: Take a screenshot . Deeper search in progress. Allow it to complete.( On my machine it took one hour) Do not stop. If you stop no harm but you have to start all over again *Smile

    Tenth Screen:Take a screenshot

Post all screenshots in the correct sequence. (All the screenshots I posted are from my experimental Trial HDD.Your screenshots may look different but the procedure is the same - upto this point..)

I need to examine the 10th screenshot for further instructions depending upon what shows in your case.
( After taking the screenshot of the tenth screen as it appeared first, you can highlight each partition that is shown , press P ( P - list files) and check whether it lists the files in it and report. Beyond that do not do anything. After viewing the list in the new window, press Q to go back > select another partition > Press P to view the list > press Q to go back to select another partition and repeat this till you finish with all partitions shown.)

To close TestDisk anytime just hit on the X on the extreme right of the title bar
