Disk swap to new system, destroyed majority of files

    Hi,

I'm having a very strange and serious issue. I build a small NAS and yes, not best practice used windows 10 as System for that NAS. Since I did not want to transfer my backup over Network first, I installed a 12 TB drive on an external HDD Hub and connected it with the main PC. After transferring the files, I installed this HDD in the NAS system. After booting the NAS, and checking the disk, I noticed that the majority of previously stored files there are GONE now!

After noticing, I removed the drive from NAS and plugged it back to the USB HDD Hub. But the files are still missing. Checked the disk with file recovery Software and there the files where found. I can restore them now to a different drive. I have no idea how this can happen. Did Windows somehow destroyed the filesystem? Or is the Controller on the NAS not capable of handling 12 TB drives. Never seen anything like this.

    Tnx, for any advice.

    :)

  2. Can VIRUS destroy the Hard disk physically

    Hi,

Viruses exploit the disk structures that your computer uses to start up by replacing, redirecting, or corrupting the code and data that start the operating system. It can also destroy the firmware of your hard disk. Virus infection can never destroy your
    disk physically.

To address your concern about a virus infected HDD, we suggest that you contact your
Original Equipment Manufacturer of your hard disk. Inform them about the issue and the troubleshooting
steps that you've performed. They can help you to install the latest firmware on your HDD and it may synchronize it on your device's motherboard. The link provided includes information about
Original Equipment Manufacturers and how to find out an
    OEM
    ’s contact information.

If you have other concerns, don't hesitate to reply on this thread.

  4. Disk swap to new system, destroyed majority of files

    SWAP usage, why?

    Hi,

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community. Let me assist you.

    • Are you facing any issues with the system performance?

Swapping is the process of evicting infrequently used application memory from the computer's physical address space yet retaining it within the process's virtual address space.

This is done by writing it to a non-volatile backing store called a
    swap volume
. The swap volume is typically stored on a hard disk as either a swap file on a file system, or as a dedicated swap partition.

If an application references the memory that has been evicted from the physical address space the operating system will have to load it from the swap volume back into the physical address space before proceeding. This allows a computer to operate more
efficiently by ensuring that high speed memory is populated only with data that is frequently used.

Swap usage is the used capacity of all swap volumes that the operating system is allowed to use.

Hope this information is helpful. Please do let us know if you need further assistance, we’ll be glad to assist you.
