    Disk Usage after 10250 -> 1511 upgrade

    Hi Guys,

I recently did a clean install of Win 10 1511 on one of my machines and things went so well that I thought I'd take the chance and upgrade my other system from Win 10 10240 to 1511, using the "Media Creation Toll" method...

It seemed to take about twice as long as a clean install, but it got there in the end and aside from a couple of minor annoyances, which I sorted (thanks to this amazing forum!) it's running fine.

One surprise that I got, after running a thorough disk-cleanup, the disk usage dropped from 20.5GB (pre-cleanup) to 11.9 (post cleanup).

Prior to the 1511 upgrade, my 10240 system disk was showing 17.5GB used space.

My questions is: Where did all of this free-space come from?

I don't use system restore and like to keep my system disk as clean of junk as possible.

    Has anyone else noticed this?

    Cheers,

    Mike.

    :)

In the Task Manager, under Performance tab, the disk utilization reaches to 100% due to which system became lagging and unresponsive. It started freezing in few moments and this keeps happening until disk usage reduces from 100%.

Also, once I start Chrome 64, it uses lots of cpu and ram to do absolutely nothing.

When you do an upgrade. Windows save the previous version of Windows in a folder: Windows.old and in addtition, it also creates some folders starting with ~BT....

After you did a clean up, These folders were removed and that how the disk size got reduced.

FYI, You mght want to also run from Admin command:
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup
It will clean the components from previous Windows and reduced disk size a little bit more.

    Thanks for the replies guys.

I had a bit more of a rummage around and have noticed that the Acronis TrueImage backup images that I created (before and after the upgrade) are only 200MB different. The settings (compression, etc) were identical for both backups:

    Pre-upgrade : disk used=17.5GB, Acronis backup image-file size=7.4GB
    Post-upgrade: disk used=11.9GB, Acronis backup image-file size=7.2GB

So it looks like the upgrade has removed some files, but seems to have compressed the rest?

    I've checked and disk-compression isn't turned on!

    Cheers,

    Mike.
