Windows 10: DISM only works with ISO Image

I have a Dell XPS 8700 with a clean install of WIN10 that has been running without errors since early August. Yesterday I decided to run SFC /scannow to see if everything was OK. It reported that the file "Microsoft.PowerShell.Host.psd1" needed to be fixed but ultimately unable to repair it. Then, as others have done, I tried using DISM to access install.esd on a Media Creation Tool on a USB drive. No joy, experienced the same error with DISM as others have had: "Error: 0x800f081f The source file could not be found."

Next I tried creating a new Media Installation Tool using a fresh download but the error repeated. I also tried copying install.esd to a local disk and still the same error. Very frustrating.

Then I opened "Microsoft.PowerShell.Host.psd1"with Notepad and I found that it was empty! I opened a copy of the file on another PC with no errors and found:

Simply copying the good file to the problem PC did not result in a clean SFC scan. Next I went back through my backup images until I found a copy of the file that wasn't empty. This image was made in an early August immediately after a clean install. Very strange.

Finally I downloaded the correct WIn10 ISO file, mounted it and then copied "install.wim" to a local hard disc. DISM ran with no problems and corrected the file error. Who knew there would be a functional difference between the esd and wim versions.

How to get november update ISO?

For my SFC DISM actions only this iso file worked:

1. Right click iso and 'Mount'

2. DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:WIM:\sources\install.wim:1 /LimitAccess

3. Unmount by 'Eject'

1. Right click iso and 'Mount' to X: first free letter

2. DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:WIM:X:\sources\install.wim:1 /LimitAccess

3. Unmount by 'Eject'
