Windows 10: DISM, unexpected behavior

Discus and support DISM, unexpected behavior in Windows 10 Performance & Maintenance to solve the problem; I tried that one also (both). Since one, if not both, are fine, why is it not working? Thanks. Discussion in 'Windows 10 Performance & Maintenance' started by ray5450, Mar 9, 2017.

I tried that one also (both).

Since one, if not both, are fine, why is it not working?

    Thanks.

Do you actually have a problem that needs fixing? I've read through this thread and as far as I can see you only have 2 corrupt files. These files were probably introduced during a windows update and do not appear in the original source file so they get flagged.

Unless your system is misbehaving I would not worry. If SFC /scannow in an elevated command prompt shows no errors then you are OK.

Next month you will get the opportunity to upgrade to the new W10 Creators edition *Smile

Windows tray icon flyouts do not work, calculator does not open, image viewer does not open, microsoft pdf printer (that came with Windows) does not work, create new user account does not work, show clock does not work, and probably others that I have not found, yet.

    sfc has no effect.

    DISM, unexpected behavior

I helped someone recently who had a very similar situation and he could not get DISM to work either. The only solution was to do an in-place upgrade to repair the W10 installation. This does not lose any of your files or apps, it takes a while to do but is worth it and will fix the issues you are having. Follow the tutorial below, use the Media Creator tool to download the W10 ISO so that it creates the right one for your system, mount it and run the setup file (step 4). Then make sure the option to keep your personal files and apps is selected in step 12.

I would have to agree, with doing a repair install...
As the two flagged files would not be the cause of all the above issues..

    As stated 2 weeks ago...
Although we just now learned of all the issues the PC has..
That would of been nice to know, in first post..

When you previously said, "If it really bothers you - you can do an in-place repair, upgrade or a system Refresh.." I thought that those procedures delete all installed programs because you also said, "keeping your files and settings.." You do not say that it keeps my installed programs.

Before posting here, someone else told me that I could use DISM for these issues I am having--sorry for not explaining that at first, but that is the why not.

I would just like to confirm...by "apps", do you mean installed programs, for example, Firefox, Open Office...things like that? Please, also confirm whether this procedure, "Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade", keeps these installed programs or it does not. It is still not clear.

Yes, all Windows Store apps and any other programs you have installed will be kept during the in-place upgrade, as I said in my earlier post just make sure you have the Keep personal files and apps option selected.

I started the procedure. It said that Windows needs more space, and also gave the option to attach an external hard drive with at least 10gb of free space. This machine came with a very small hard drive. I connected an external hard drive with over 500gb of free space, but it seems to be ignoring that and keeps saying that it needs more space. (?)

Try and clean up as much space as possible on your system: remove all documents, photos, music, data to the external drives, delete any downloads you no longer need, remove any programs you no longer use and follow the following two tutorials to clean out temporary files and other unnecessary stuff.

Delete Temporary Files in Windows 10

Open and Use Disk Cleanup in Windows 10

Hopefully this will create enough space for you to continue.

I do disk cleanups regularly. I do not have any files to move because I store everything on an external drive already because it is not big enough. I don't know why it will not do the install using the external drive like it offers the option to.

Have a look at this thread - Reduce Windows size in HDD - it might give you some ideas. Check out the CompactOS link.

Otherwise if you are so short of space then you will never be able to upgrade W10 through the normal Windows Update and your only option will be a clean install.

    DISM, unexpected behavior

Okay, thanks. I used those and got up to a total of 9.53gb of free space. However, it still told me there was not enough room. Next, I tried downloading it from another machine, and transferring the iso with an external drive. I tried the installation with that iso, I tried the installation with the iso I originally downloaded (see 1st post), I tried the installation with the iso that Kyhi's tool downloaded and they all said the same thing: "Windows 10 installation has failed".

Does this mean that my only option is to wipe the drive and start over?

    Hi,

Sooner or later you'll run into the same problem, no ?
What's the size of that drive anyway ?

    Cheers, *Wink
