Windows 10: Distorted Audio - soundcard broken?

Is my soundcard broken?

Just a day ago I accidentally yanked my headphone cord while it was in the socket(the one on the back of my desktop). This broke the plastic around the edge.

Now when I plug my headphones in again, the sound is missing half of the frequencies(rendered unintelligible) and is very quiet.

I have a socket on the front of my desktop as well, and when plugged in from there I still have the same problem. Jiggling the cord in the socket will change some of the frequencies and the pan, but it doesn't fix the problem. I have also tried restarting the computer as well as banging on it, but so far I still have the problem.

I'm on windows 10, my motherboard is a msi CSM-B75MA-P45. I think my audio driver is realtek.

Any help is appreciated.

Audio Problems - Robotic Sounds.

I have a problem with a Realtek soundcard and HD Audio (through my monitor). Major "random" robotic sounds and also distortion type sounds. Can happen at any time using any audio app (iTunes, Youtube, etc). Have re-installed the latest drivers from Realtek
and this fixes problem but as soon as PC is re-booted the problem returns. Have been onto Microsoft several times who do the same fix which fixes the problem temporarily.

Just wondered if anyone else has had the same problem or if there is a permanent fix.

Considering the issue is happening both when using the rear port and the front port Im betting that you damaged the connector on the headphones and not the sound card. That is the only thing that would cause the same issue to happen wether you are using the front or rear port. To make certain of this, try your headphones in a jack on another computer or audio device like a CD player, smartphone, portable radio, etc and see if the problem persists. If it does, its definitely the headphones.

 

Hi Arazel. Thanks for the response. I just tried plugging my headphones into my laptop and the sound comes out fine, however the sound coming from the desktop is still distorted. I think it is a problem with my desktop and not the headphones themselves.

 

In the desktop, is it an actual card or is it integrated sound? IF its a seperate card, you might be able to try the integrated (if it has it, Im assuming it does) and see if it produces the same results.

 

I think it's just integrated sound. I didn't buy a separate soundcard. It's whatever came with the motherboard.

So do you think it's the sound card that's messed up, or is the way the computer is processing the sound? You seem to know more about this than I do.
