Windows 10: DNS and gateway unavailable- constant resetting of wireless adapter

Hello,

I have been having a constant issue with my Dell XPS L702 laptop dropping the WiFi connection. I have to constantly reset the adapter because I get errors that rotate between "DNS Unavailable" and "Gateway unavailable". When I troubleshoot the connection, Windows will either rest the adapter or make the gateway available, but I have no idea what caused this issue. I just upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10, but the errors were happening in Windows 7 as well. I have uninstalled the WiFi drivers (Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1030) and reinstalled, I have run a full virus and malware scan in safe mode and regular Windows, and I have tried choosing other WiFi adapter drivers from the list of approved drivers in device manager (this laptop has one Microsoft driver and two Intel drivers that are compatible, but none solve the issue). No other devices have any issues on the internet, so I know it is isolated to this laptop. My MTB results are attached.

Windows 10 hosted network hotspot problem

After change the wireless ip to 192.168.0.1, it still the same.

Wired connection works fine. It's only a wireless issue.

 

You are not the only one if you do a wide search on the internet. Are you running W10-pro or W10-home? I discovered that W10-home is more relaxed in network access and responces on mouseclick like the good old W7 where W10-pro is searching and connecting/disconnecting and in the end displays the message that it cannot find what you want to connect to.

 

This happened constantly in Win7 as well. It has been happening for a few months now, so it is not a new/isolated issue.

 

Hi Wireless routers wear out just like other components. How old is your router. If it's not dumping you wired, that's a good indication your router might be bad. Try a new router. Most stores have two weeks return. If the new one acts the same return it!
A new router solved the problem for me!!
Worst scenario. You have a defective wireless adapter, which is not difficult to replace!

 

Hi @RattlerSkin

I had a quick read through your FarBar MiniToolBox post.

1. You say it appears it is isolated only to this laptop. What other devices are also connecting to the router, and for how long?

2. This happened also when the laptop was running W7. Have you tried disabling the option to allow the computer to sleep the adapter?





Please make this change and test to see if it makes a difference. If not, see #3.

3. Log into your router and enable static DHCP assignment. Then, assign a permanent IP address to your laptop, using its MAC address. Check also if you can change your lease settings to "Forever".

Reboot laptop. Now test to see if this resolves the problem.

4. Any particular reason why your BT is disabled? See if enabling it resolves the issue. (Somehow these are related.)

Reboot. Test again to see if the problem is resolved.

5. (Probably makes no difference, but) Assign specific IPv4 and IPv6 DNS servers to your wifi adapter. OpenDNS servers are:
IPv4: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220
IPv6: 2620:0:ccc::2 and 2620:0:ccd::2

Then, flush your DNS cache. Open an administrator command prompt and type ipconfig /flushdns then press ENTER

Reboot. Again, test to see if it is resolved.

6. Completely unrelated to your issue, but wanted to mention: I would not use IOBit advanced system care. These types of programs tend to do more harm than good. Ccleaner is the only one I will recommend, and even then you have to be careful what you let it delete.

7. I see lots of Cortana errors (relating to search) - are you having problems with that or have you turned it off? If problems, you might want to run a system file checker sfc /scannow.

8. Please uninstall the older, insecure versions of Java. Also update Adobe Reader XI to Adobe Reader DC.

9. Just a thought here: What is your router broadcasting? b/g or b/g/n? Sometimes, older wifi cards have difficulty with b/g/n and frequently disconnect. I have this problem with one of my wifi cards, and so I had to turn the "n" off and only broadcast b/g, and now it works fine. I'll have to upgrade this wifi adapter soon...

That's all I can think of, besides a faulty wireless adapter. Actually, they're inexpensive and quite easy to replace. If all else fails, you might want to just replace it.
