  1. DNS Services not Installed

I've spent the last two days trying to track down the root of the issue and it appears that the problem is my Windows 11 update from Win 10 did not run completely error free and the DNS Cache Service can't be found and I have no idea how to get it. When I go into services.msc, it isn't there to start. I figured this out when I saw the I couldn't turn on network discovery to access my NAS. I can click it and it says its on, but as soon as I navigate away, it is off again. I've tried many things, one of which was to restart the DNS Cache Service, but it isn't there at all in either Standar

    :)

  2. Browser /connection security, hosts file and DNS service

You're saying that Open DNS(and other services like it) house their own list of known 'bad' sites, and by using their DNS servers, it will filter out sites based on that list?

Would you believe I was already using Open DNS servers.
This means the hosts file is moot?

And furthering that, if there's any bespoke sites I want to manually add, I could do it through my router directly.

Thus I can empty my local hosts file and turn my DNS service back on?

  3. DNS problems with router

A couple suggestions I have for you:

Update the firmware on the router. Maybe it's getting into a badstate, and a firmware update might fix it. Or if you're comfortable with it, install a custom firmware like dd-wrt. Just make sure its supported on your router first.

Change your DNS to: 8.8.8.8, 4.2.2.1. Might help.

If none of these work, maybe statically set your DNS on your PS3/PC to the IPs you listed, taking the router out of the lookup procedure.

Last option, is look for a new router.
