  1. DNS Unblocker and Microsoft Edge

    I've recently removed DNS Unblocker and its associated trojan from my Windows 10 operating PC.
    DNS Unblocker is a pernicious program which hijacks links in browsers and throws up spurious advertisments in browsers.
    I then removed it from Firefox by selecting "Refresh Firefox" from Firefox's troubleshooting page, but I can't work out how to do something similar with Edge.
    Any offers?

    :)

  2. dns unblocker on Edge

    <The actual quote is from Ricardo Lira a member commenting on this removal guide -- where the site actively pushes a known unwanted product,
    spyhunter -- howtoremove.guide/remove-ads-by-dns-unblocker/ .>

    Found the below in another thread. The person posting it had copied it from another source, but did not link to the source. The solution notes that the DNS settings for your network adapter need to be corrected in addition to the removal
    steps from the guide.

    "After investigating, I found out that the damn "DNS Unlocker" had modified my DNS settings! After fixing this I was completely good! I have google chrome, so I am unsure if this fix persist to other browsers.

    The path to do this follows:

    Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center > Change Adapter Settings > Right-click your active internet connection (usually Wi-Fi since everyone uses that, unless your using a desktop) and click properties
    > Now under the Networking tab, scroll down until you find Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) > Highlight that then click on properties > Both options in this windows should be automatic! The first option should be set to "Obtain an IP address automatically"
    and the second should be set to "Obtain DNS server address automatically!" If your computer belongs to a company or you actually have a custom DNS then this would not apply to you. Once you are finish, click "OK" and close the windows > Now go back into Chrome
    and reset your settings one more time and boom! It should work just fine."

    dns unblocker on Edge

    Thanks, I tried those settings but still get the adds and misdirects. I am trying to find a malware removal software but dns unblocker redirects me.

    See here for removal instructions: [infected link removed]

    Alternatively and better option *Unsure if this forum does so* find a reputable site that can instruct in HijackThis / malware removal such as Malwarebytes Community (I used to do so but too long ago now to comfortably advise)

  5. Thank you for your suggestions. Unfortunately the site you mentioned does not have instructions for removing the remaining bit of DNS Unlocker from the Microsoft Edge browser. This browser looks to have a fairly limited range of settings and the assumption appears to be that Edge will always function perfectly. I've only used it once to see what it looked like!

    If you follow the instructions for downloading HiJackThis and posting the log, the good folks there will tell you which antimalware programs to run and items to let HJT clean-up.

    As I mentioned I used to read these logs but was a long time ago now so I personally am not up to speed with the nuances of modern malware like they are.*Redface

  8. DNS Unblocker and Microsoft Edge

    I may not have expressed myself clearly. I have already removed DNS Unblocker and its associated Trojan. The remaining problem was to reset Edge, for which none of the sites mentioned has a solution.
    If, however, anyone else experiences a similar problem, here is how to reset Edge:
    Delete the folder
    C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe
    If it won't delete, then open it and delete all its components, then try again to delete the whole thing.
    This then prevents Edge from running, so proceed as follows:
    From an admin PowerShell prompt;
    Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers -Name Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml" -Verbose}
    You may run PowerShell as administrator by finding it in the Start list, then right-clicking and choosing the administrator option.
    This did the trick for me.
    Thanks for all the suggestions about other things.
    Cheers
