Windows 10: Do i need to buy a license of Windows XP when this OS is running in a Virtual machine on a...

I want to virtualize a Windows XP computer with a OEM windows XP license. can i just create a Virtual machine of this computer and then run this on a new Windows 11 computer host computer whiteout buying a license for Windows XP guest computer.

To whom it may concern;

I have Hyper-V up and running in Windows 10. I created a virtual machine easily enough.

I want to run Windows XP Mode in this virtual machine in order to run an old software.

I have downloaded Windows XP Mode.exe from Microsoft site.

I created an ISO file from this Windows XP Mode.exe file and used this in the setup manager of Hyper-V.

When I click on "Connect" I get the following message:





Do I need to burn this file to a CD and use as a boot?

Yes a Virtual Machine needs a licensed copy of Windows so you will need to buy one. Of course. XP has been discontinued so you will need to look for one. Maybe a friend has a Retail version they are no longer using. Check Craig's list and eBay and so on though
be aware that you need to ensure you are purchasing a legitimate Retail copy. An original OEM version that came with a computer can not have the license extended to another computer. A Retail license can be used on any computer as long as it is only on one
computer at a time.
