Do you really get Windows 10 free with 7 and 8.1?

I have 2 PCs. One with Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit and one withWindows 7 Home premium SP1 32bit. They meet the system requirements for Windows10. The Win 8.1 has an i7 @ 2.67GHz with 8GB RAM. The Win 7 has a P4 @ 3.4GHzwith 4 GB RAM. They both have 1TB HDs with 16GB free space.

    System requirements
Basically, if your PC can run Windows 8.1, you’re goodto go. If you're not sure, don't worry—Windows will check your system to makesure it can install the preview.

    • Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster
    • RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)
    • Free hard disk space: 16 GB
    • Graphics card: Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM driver
    • A Microsoft account and Internet access

I don’t have the Windows 10 icon in the tray on the win 7 or8.1 PC. I have all updates including KB3035583. I also have theWindows\System32\GWX folder with files. I am running Windows 10 preview on a virtualmachine since it came out with no problems. I tryed installing the KB3035583again. It said my PC is not compatible. If it’s not compatible, how did it installthe first time and how am I running Windows 10 preview with no problems?

    :)

that operating system, but I'm not sure about asking for a free copy of the operating

    system.

If you're really talking about Windows Phone 7, Microsoft's new operating system for cell

phones, then you need to know it is officially available only installed in a phone, not

    separately.

  5. There is a link for 'more info' or something along those lines when the appraiser reports the status. In my case, on the Win7 machine, the more info told me that a driver might not be compatible. The appraiser should give you that information up front, but alas, you have to look for it.

As Jeff (aka BunnyJ) mentioned you don't need to reserve the update to get it. On 29 July every qualifying install will be offered the update. Hopefully by that time MS will have worked through the not compatible issue and all working drivers will be available. The reservation provides MS an idea on how many installs will upgrade immediately and it also provides a mechanism to pre-load some of the bits in order to minimize the load on the servers.

If you still want to try and get the icon to show up, have a look at this thread:

Solved Get Windows 10 (gwx) app: Appraiser and Reservation notification icon
The zip file has a batch file that offers a few means to force the icon to appear. It took me three days to get it to show up on Win7 and then I uninstalled the GWX KB. I'll update next year after the first major release (codenamed Redstone)

Also know that it might take more than one choice to get it to show up or ... it might take a few days for it to show up .... or it might take more than one iteration of the choices.

Don't fret too much if you cannot get the icon to appear.

OK, I got the Win 8.1 PC fixed. I ran sfc /scannow and it found noproblems. Then I ran Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth. It said, thecomponent store corruption was repaired. Then I went to theWindows\System32\GNX folder and ran GWX.exe as administrator again. This timethe icon came up and I was able to reserve my copy of Windows 10.

I found out what was wrong with the Windows 7 PC. I downloaded the win10fix_full.bat and ran that. Option 2 brought up the icon. I clicked on it and it brought the first screen. I looked at it for a while not knowing what to do, I clicked on the little square in the upper left corner and it brought up the menu in the second pic. I ran the Check Your Pc and it said your processor is not supported. So I guess that’s the end of that. At least I know why now. Thanks for all the replies.
