Windows 10: Documentation with descriptions on all possible column types in Windows 10 File Explorer?

Is there any documentation that explains all the different possible column types there are for Windows 10 File Explorer? See screenshot below.This all started because I was trying to find a way to color code individual files in a directory, and discovered there's a "Color" column. It wasn't what I was looking for and I still don't know what the "Color" column is for, but it led me down the rabbit hole of the bazillion different column types you can enable.I realize that many of these columns are auto-filled from data that is unique to specific file types like bit rate for audio files or hei

Editing File Icon and Type Description

This is a question about File Explorer in Windows 10: how do I change the icon as well as the description displayed under the "Type" column in File Explorer?

For each entry (directory or file) in File Explorer, there is an icon on the left next to the its name and a description under the "Type" column, such as "File folder" for a directory and "Text Document" for a .txt file. As an example, I have associated
.pdf files with Google Chrome as the default program for opening it. They have the Chrome logo as the icon and "Chrome HTML Document" under the "Type" column, which is a little misleading. How would I change the icon to, say, a document icon from C:\Windows\system32\imageres.dll,
and the type description to something more sensible like "PDF Document"?

I have tried to edit the registry directly via the Registry Editor that comes with Windows, editing the "(default)" entries of the relevant file types in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts,
then restarting explorer.exe each time I make a change. However, nothing seems to have changed when I opened File Explorer again. Searching through past questions on similar issues did not give me any solutions either.

• changing the column layout in File Explorer.

How do I change what is listed in the Type column in Windows Explorer?

Hi, if you wish to look a little deeper you could use this free program - here I've chosen zip as this shows the text appearing in file explorer's file type column clearly under Description, shown in explorer at the bottom of the screenshot.





You can also see further details of course, such as the associated program.

Whilst the program also lets you change those fields, I wouldn't suggest that here, although that would be 'safer' and easier than using a registry editor- better to try completely uninstalling those programs as suggested above, or succeeding in properly reassociating the relevant file types.

 

Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK
