Windows 10: Documents showing in recent when not opened

I have noticed that every time I open file explorer, the recent list shows a random 10 documents which are stored on onedrive that I haven't accessed on this or any other device. I am the only one with access to the device and the onedrive folder.

Office 365 - removing recent documents

You would need to go to the app that was used for that document and remove it from the recent documents list within the app. For example if a Word document shows up in the list and you want to remove it; open Word and then in the recent documents list within Word right click on the entry you want to remove and select Remove from list.

Several months ago, my computer froze up when I woke it up from sleep mode (a recurrent issue, but somewhat infrequent), and I had to forcibly shut it down and then restart it. Everything was fine until I opened MS Word, where I discovered that for some reason, the recent documents list on the File tab now only shows the last 10 documents despite it being set to show 50. And yes, I checked, it was still set as such; I even changed it to see if it would fix it, to no avail. Specifically, if I put the value below 10, it will reduce the list accordingly, but it will refuse to show more than 10 documents if I set it above 10.

And to be clear, Word seems to be retaining a bigger list than is visible, because when I remove one of the 10 visible files from the list, it immediately brings an earlier opened file at the bottom. In contrast, the "More" list at the bottom shows a lot more files (seems to be close to 50 just by eye-balling it) even if I ignore the pinned ones.

Strangely enough, opening the main Office program itself instead of directly opening Word lets me see all of the 50 most recent files, so something is happening with Word alone.

After asking around, my current suspicion is that the crash may have corrupted a system file of some sort under the hood, and it's one that a repairing of the Office installation wouldn't touch at all.
