On windows 11. I changed the "default apps" setting for specified filetypes to a different application yet they still open in the office apps

since this happens in some of the computers only, suggest that you open the file on working computer and copy everything and paste to a new powerpoint file.
most of the time it works to me. *Smile

"How to open this file" prompt after searching for Excel files from the taskbar

I found a fix that persisted through a restart. I'm not sure what triggered the problem still, but this was the fix to stop Office files constantly prompting for how to open when launched from the start menu:

1. With File Explorer, browse to a folder location where Word, Excel, Powerpoint, or other Office files are located.
   
2. Go to Settings > Apps > Default Apps.
   
3. For Word, change the default program for the .docx file extension from Word to Notepad.
   
   
   
   
4. In File Explorer, open a .docx file. It will open with Notepad. (This step is important. If you simply switch it back to Word without first executing it from file explorer, the start menu isn't fixed)
   
5. Close the file you just opened.
   
6. Back in Default Apps, switch the default program for .docx from Notepad to Word.
   
7. Repeat for each file extension experiencing this issue, such as .xlsx and .pptx.
