Windows 10: Dodgy MS pop up ( supposedly)

Hi all
i have just had a pop up and voice saying my Windows 10 had been infected do not just turn your pic off ring this phone number and Microsoft will talk you through removing it ( so I turned pc off ) when I turned it on again I ran a full scan and it did find anything, anyone else had this ?
i am pretty sure it was dodgy ( I hope )

looking for a n8 ebook reader

I tried a couple of suggestions a few weeks ago, but they seemed so buggy and full of dodgy pop-ups that I aborted. I do hope Nokia puts something out through ovi very soon.



No idea what you tried but ereader pro never uses pop-ups and is not dodgy at all. I read all my ebooks on my N8 these days.

 

when microsoft defender finds a virus dose it direct you to a help teelphone number?

last night my comp started showing a virus had been detected and a pop up with a free phone number tried to redirect me to support line , is this a correct or something dodgy ?

 

Yes, it is definitely dodgy, MS does not offer assistance like that. Better to perform some scans with:

Emsisoft Free Emergency Kit: Portable malware scanner and HitmanPro

CCleaner - cleans temporary files, browser's cache, where malware likes to reside.

 

Sounds like a virus, I suggest a combination of ESET (you can run it for free for 7 days) and Malwarebytes (same thing). Run a full ESET scan first, make sure you set the options for deletion and quarantine of any found viruses - Under "advanced setup" "antivirus and antispyware" "On Demand Computer Scan" there are profiles for each type of scan, find "Smart Scan" and check every box, and set it up for "sctrict cleaning" Then go back out to the main ESET screen and start a Smart Scan. It'll delete anything it finds, if you have a few false positives those are easily restored and excluded.

Malwarebytes is a little easier to set up, even the free version, just set it up, activate the trial, and run a scan, it will find and obliterate anything ESET missed (which won't be much).

Also do a visual scan of your Users/(user)/AppData folders for any folders and files that look unusual. DO the same for your c:\ProgramData folder. That's where this slime gets stashed usually, AND, in your Java cache if you hae that installed.

 

Good idea and while you are at it, find TDSSKILLER (usually on Major Geek's site, kaspersky no longer has a download link for the tool), and then search for ESET Sirefef, there is a simple dos tool for that. I always check for those kinds of infections, even though they are relatively old.

Some free apps come with "toolbar" software, I highly suggest downloading REVO 1.9.4 from oldversion.com and used "advanced uninstall" on every toolbar, you may have some you never knew you had. Look for Babylon toolbar, also, WAJAM is another, not to be confused with the Android WANAM tweak for samsung devices.

When it warns not to turn the computer off it frequently is Ransomware, just want to get your money. I have luck in using the power button to fully shut the computer down, unplugging/turning off the Internet then start up and run antivirus and antimalware programs. Usually also empty the TEMP folder [Windows key + R] type %TEMP% and press Enter, delete everything you can. Go to Control Panel, Internet Options and delete Temporary Internet Files. Then put everything back to normal.

 

No, no, no... I don't know how many times we have to go through this.

This particular scam is not a virus, or malware, or ransomware. Running scan's won't find anything, because there's nothing to find (usually, though it's possible that an adware PUP might redirect you to this page, I've not seen that happen).

The page is just a specially crafted page that uses javascript to prevent you from closing it. If your browser is set to save state and reload your previous pages, simply shutting down the browser won't fix it (nor will turning off your pc). The only way to fix it is to close your browser (task manager if necessary), disable your internet connection, then restart your browser and close the window (which now generates an error), once you have closed the window you can re-enable your internet.

That's not to say there might not be a virus on your computer, but if there is, it's not related to this popup.

So don't be alarmed if virus scans don't turn up anything, most times they won't. The popup is largely harmless, other than being annoying to get rid of. And people, please stop scaring people by telling them it's all this other stuff, which they likely won't find on their system. You're just freaking people out that they can't find the virus that doesn't exist.

i tried the other suggestions but found nothing ,I have deleted browsing history opened edge again and nothing came up and from what you are saying it was only on the browser would browsing history be stored elsewhere that I need to delete?
I don't use Windows for anything financial I use Apple I only use Windows for Mercedes workshop manual and it is on an external SSD.

If you want to be safe, you can delete your temporary files and browsing history if you want.
