My numbers are different, but all seems to be running just fine. This is my disk now. (8/9/2015), a clean install from media.

This is good information but I am confused about step 2 below. Wouldn't I need to select whatever device, USB or DVD, the install media is on at this point and not how I want the final install to boot?
Thanks, and sorry for dragging up an old post but it had most of the info I was looking for.

It is up to you whether you want to install Windows using MBR or GPT and you need to set the option in the BIOS for MBR or GPT style installation.

Having said that. Here's the steps:
    • Disconnect all HD/SSD except the one you will be installing Windows
    • From the boot menu, Select #1 for GPT or select #2 for MBR to boot up the Windows Installation
      Attachment 29081
NOTE: The screen is an example and might look different from yours
    • Once the Windows Installation started. On the first screen, Press and hold SHIFT Key + F10, a command Windows will popup then type:
      - diskpart
      - select disk 0
      - Clean
      - Exit
      - Exit
    • Click Next to continue.
    • Select Custom
    • Select the first unallocated partition and click next. Windows will create all needed partitions to install Windows 10
    • Follow all the rest of the instruction to complete.

    MBR installation:
    • 500MB System Reserved partition
    • C: Drive
    GPT installation:
    • 450MB recovery partition
    • 100MB EFI System Partition
    • 16MB MSR partition
    • C drive.

At step 2 you will select which device you want to boot from, USB flash drive or DVD. On some systems you will also have the choice how you want to boot it, UEFI or legacy BIOS.

The choice of how you boot from the installation device determines whether Windows sets up the SSD/HDD as GPT for UEFI booting or MBR for legacy BIOS booting.

I was a bit confused as the attached image (which doesn't seem to show up on a quoted reply) shows both options 1 and 2 at what appears to be a SSD drive and not on either a USB drive or DCD if I am seeing it right.

My Boot menu screen will give me the 2 install options, I believe this is because I have 3 options in my Bios

    UEFI only
    Legacy & UEFI
    Legacy only

and I have it set to Legacy & UEFI

As long as I have a bare install drive, I could choose either one and not have any issues, but I always create an install partition and use Legacy mode.

AddRAM That seem to be a picture of disk partitions options (possibly for installation) once you have already booted the device you are installing from. My question was about how the original boot device selection seemed to influence the type of partition style that Windows eventually will be installed on.
as far as I can tell, but I have never seen this, as long as bios settings are correct a DVD or USB stick with the install media on it will show up as 2 different devices, one for each type of partition, and that choice determines the outcome.
Someone please correct me if this is wrong.
I am going to help a friend this weekend do a fresh install on a system with UEFI. I have not done an install on that type of system. Like you I have always made a large formatted partition with diskpart from the install media before proceeding so as to only have that one partition and no hidden ones (MBR of course).
But as GPT is being touted as the thing of the future the owner wants to install that way.

You can't do that with UEFI. There has to be a FAT32 EFI System partition, an NTFS partition for Windows and Microsoft claims that there must also be a small Microsoft System Reserved (MSR) partition.

Well there goes my experiment for today, I was gonna make 1 install partition on a GPT drive just as I`ve always done on a MBR drive for W7 and see if W10 would install on it.

    Bang, Zoom *Sad

I`ll stick with Legacy and MBR, I`ve seen no great advantage with UEFI yet.

You can still try it and post the results Does a Windows 10, clean install, create the necessary partitions? :) Windows 10 should do 1 of two things, it will either give you an error that it can't create a system partition or it will shrink the partition you made for it to make it's own EFI System Partition. Also, that stupid MSR partition that Microsoft claims is required will not show up in disk management. It will show up in diskpart when you list partitions on the drive, though.

I was just going to say, it`ll probly throw up the "Windows can not be installed to this disk" something to that affect.

@ A Moneli, it looks like you`re just gonna have to install to unallocated space, as Navy stated, but I will conduct my experiment in a bit and post the results.

Does a Windows 10, clean install, create the necessary partitions?

If you want to use the GPT partition style, you must boot from the Windows installation media in UEFI mode. If you want to use the MBR partition style, you must boot from the Windows installation media in Legacy BIOS mode.

So you`re saying there will be 4 partitions ?

When I installed in UEFI out of boredom a few weeks back I had 3 in DM.

An EFI, A Recovery and W10

Correct *Smile But only on the correctly initialized drive or to unallocated space. Otherwise you`ll get the dreaded "Windows can not be installed to this disk" etc so many people got that message trying to install 7 on their new UEFI boards.
