Windows 10: Does resetting W11 and keeping files keep all personal files?

Specific context: I have a file with a bunch of editing assets, footage, mods, software and other things in my personal files on my Desktop. I wanted to ask before I reinstalled my PC through the reset feature, if all files on the Desktop would save, or just specific files like images, text documents or videos.

W11 File Explorer?

I have clicked the setup iso file and I have not been given an option to upgrade. It has stopped at a window that says ‘Ready to Install, you have chosen to Install W11 Pro and keep personal files and apps’. Is this correct, should I continue?

 

What files are considered as "Personal Files"?

Personal files includes documents, photos and videos. If you saved these kind of files in D:\, it will be considered as personal files.

If you choose to reset your PC and keep your files, it will:

• Reinstall Windows 10 and keeps your personal files.
• Remove apps and drivers you installed.
• Remove changes you made to settings.
• Remove any apps your PC manufacturer installed. (If your PC came with Windows 10, apps from your PC manufacturer will be reinstalled.)

Keep Personal Files on Resetting Windows

When you choose to reset Windows 10, you will be offered the option to keep your files.

That will mean all you personal files inside your user folder will be kept safe.

With regards to backing up, you can only keep your files after a reset, so just copy them out onto a USB drive for safe keeping, it is always advisable to have a backup, one copy of your files is never enough.
