Be aware that If you want to use an NVMe drive like that of the Samsung 950 Pro, you'll need an NVMe adapter connected to a PCIE port. This will cause the NVMe drive to run at the slower speed of the PCIE port.

As far as I know, there is no such thing as an NVMe port. NVMe drives run on regular PCI-E interfaces. The M.2 slot is just a different physical form factor for PCI-E.

High-end (expensive) NVMe SSDs mount in regular PCI-E slots. That's particularly true for drives intended for servers.

True, to a point but NVMe drives still require an M.2 slot. That M.2 port runs at PCIE Gen 3 x4, faster than a regular PCIE port, up to 32Gb/s.

    Hi,

If the Mobo has a PCIe slot that is Gen 3.0 and supports 4 lanes or more then it does not make any difference whether you connect the NVMe drive to the M.2 slot or mount it via an adaptor in the proper PCIe slot.
In fact, coolingwise you're likely better of going for a passively cooled adaptor.

I have a Patriot NVMe drive that heats the entire PC, not energy efficient at all as it runs at 60 degrees C even when it's just idling. On top of that it is cooled, without it it idles at over 70 degrees C.
Guess I'm going to stick it on an Aquacomputer card which comes with impressive cooling and outstanding quality.

Sorry, no. There are NVMe drives intended for regular PCI-E slots. The ones for servers may not be available at all in M.2.

    Here's an example:

    https://www.intel.com/content/www/us...-aic-20nm.html

(First Intel consumer grade NVMe SSD. Interface is PCI-E X4, gen 3.)

The chipset and BIOS must support NVMe in order for that mode to function, even though you can insert such a card in older X4, X8, or X16 slots. I'm not sure, but I believe that an NVME SSD can operate on a non-NVMe board. I wouldn't be surprised if the performance loss was trivial (for non-server applications).

I'm not sure why you say that an M.2 Gen 3 X4 interface is faster than a regular PCI-E slot. They are the same (if Gen 3 X4). Same specs.

If you have the slots, a PCI-E NVMe card (not M.2) would be preferable if you intend to make heavy use of it. The cooling on the M.2 cards isn't the best, so thermal throttling may occur to keep the card from overheating.

    Hi,

Further to the above, there are M.2 adaptor cards that convert the M.2 slot into a PCIe 3.0 x4 slot.

Sure, plenty of servers out there that support these as mere storage devices in PCIe slots.

    Cheers, *Wink

You seem to want to win an argument so let me put this to rest. We're talking specifically about Samsung's NVMe SSD drives which require an m.2 slot. Period.

Further, the OP is talking about using an m.2 slotted drive on an non-native m.2 slotted motherboard (Z87) and thus their need for a PCIE adapter card. Period.

And you might want to Google Samsung's NVMe 950 & 960 SSD drives and notice the connection port they're using.

    Let's stay on point here.

    Peace *Cool

Win an argument? No, sir. Getting close to the ad hominem, I think.

Look at your post (#16) again. If you weren't making general claims about NVMe drives, you could have written it more clearly. Regardless of that, it's mostly incorrect.

I don't need the last word, but this will be my last in this thread.

  11. for knowledge

AHCI only support 32 commands at a time

while NVMe support 65000 commands at a time

those M/B which didnt support NVMe on PCIe fully , and uses AHCI
then user will not get that potential amount of outcome-performance on old M/B even if they detect and run NVMe SSD
    ( i think so )

Chipset must 1st-Natively support NVMe , M.2 as mention by M/B manufacturer+CPU requirement starts from Haswell Refresh

    cheers
