Does Win10 support the old Windows FTP Client?

I've written a couple of utilities for my wife's club (upload passwords, upload newsletter) that uses the Windows FTP client. They quit working for the two users who have upgraded to 10. I have to do it for them. This has kept me form upgrading to 10. Has it changed or have they quit supporting it?

I'm leaving for most of the day so I won't be able to reply for a while.

    :)

  2. Open FTP site in File explorer not working in windows 10

After updating Windows 10 to version 1703 (OS Build 15063.483), I lost FTP access through File Explorer.

Whenever I type ftp url, it opens up IE and tried to access FTP site. It then becomes temperamental. FTP download may work or it pops up with authentication screen. Once it pops up authentication screen, there is no way to download from FTP site.

Bluetooth Connection lost after a few seconds - EVERYTIME

Exactly, Windows Phone 8 does not support Bluetooth File Browsing (FTP). It supports Bluetooth file pushing (OPP), only. Does that make sense?

    Yes, Windows 10 supports FTP.

    SmartFTP - FTP Client

I would be you can even do it directly in Windows file explorer, but haven't tried it myself.

Hi iamjim and welcome to Tenforums.

I just opened a run box on a W10Pro x64 rig and typed a few commands and it appears to be working. I've never used this myself (always used FileZilla), but based on what I read here, it still looks like it applies:

Using the Built-In Windows FTP Client | Networking content from Windows IT Pro

    Hope that helps.

EDIT: Here's something I found on our sister site, Sevenforums:

  6. I have found the FTP still works in Windows 10 if used in explorer. However, the useful old 'open FTP site in explorer' option within internet explorer no longer works/does anything. At least when I last tried it a few months ago.

I don't know. You would think if it works in W8, it would still work in W10. Are you able to physically get to one of the W10 computers at the club and manually input the commands in a run box, and see what returns?

  9. It would be helpful if you were more specific about what "it" is. Is it a script or batch file? From Windows 7 to W8 to W10 the thing I have noticed is Windows being more testy with permissions. Programs I have written that watch the active Window that worked fine run as a user up to Windows 7 I find with W8 and later they need to be run As Administrator.

Especially if you try to write files under Program Files it may balk. But it is tough to track down without knowing what operations you are doing.

When you're right you're right. I've been intending to do this for a couple of days.

Nothing about this is in the a Windows Program Files directory.

The filename for the following is FTPuploadNewsletter.ftp

    File contents:
    open xxxxxguild.org
    guildnews
password (password to xxxxxguild.org is sent here)
    ascii
put newsletter.htm (name of am htm file)
    Binary
put vol43no12.pdf (name of a file)
    quit

This thing works perfectly on my Windows 8.1 machine.

  11. Have you enabled TFTP in Turn Windows features on or off?
You might have to change your utils (FTP to TFTP) - but the basic put and get functions should be available

  12. Again detail would help. All we have so far is "it doesn't work." Is there an error message? Have you tried being on the phone with one of the people with W10 as they try it? Then you could tell them to look for any error msg and read it to you etc..

I realize remote unsophisticated users don't give much feedback but without anything it amounts to a guessing game.

Does Win10 support the old Windows FTP Client?

I use ftp daily and it works fine in 10 and exactly the same as it ever did.

Like @MilesAhead said some detail of the error would help.

I do find (as I use vpn quite a lot) that sometimes ftp will be blocked. This is nothing to do with the OS though - it is how you are connecting to the internet. Some vpn (for some security reason I don't understand) block ftp. Obviously you'll get a reason code indicating if this is the case.

SmartFTP is a commercial client. I would use FileZilla or WinSCP.
