Does Windows 10 not support DVD-R anymore?

Before I toss all of these DVDs I need to find out if Microsoft has set Windows 10 not to support them anymore. The last time I tried to burn some information onto disc it acted like it was burning and closing the disc to be read and then when I checked it there was nothing on the Disc. This happened on both my desktop and laptop that have windows 10 installed. I was able to burn onto some vintage DVD-RW discs I have. But I prefer not to use these as I am providing wedding pictures and would prefer that the customer not have the ability to change them on the DVD.
Does anyone know if this is the case or are all my disc suddenly bad?
    Thanks, Linda

    :)

how do I get a turbotax2017 cd to run on my computer?

jameslayton1 asked about a TurboTax CD (actually a DVD). Why would he want to use WMP for that?

    WMP does support video formats
other than the obsolescent WMV, such a MP4. What WMP doesn't support is DVD Video, the format used for commercial movie DVDs, which is also irrelevant to the question.

  3. Blu-ray RW don't recognize the DVD+R clear bulk on Windows 10

Reinstalled the windows 10 home core single language, previously worked good writing such DVD+R, now see this writing DVDs, but if I insert a clear bulk DVD+R it says that it don't supports this type of DVD bulk, In my computer it appears as CD drive(previously
it was AS BD-ROM), deleted the Deamon tools emulator of virtual drives(iSCSI and maybe somethat)

What software are you using to burn the discs? Are you using the built in burn option in Windows, or are you using third party software (e.g. ImgBurn, InfraRecorder, etc?)

Just using the Windows burn option, setting them up as flash drives and formatting them. This worked up until last week, I'm assuming after the the last update on windows.

I just tested a recording using an old CD-R disk (bought somewhere around 2005) under my current version of Windows 10 on my desktop using Roxio's NZT 2 (Formally Easy CD Creator) and copied some photos to the disc and all went well. I then put the disc in my portable CD Drive connected to my laptop and all the contents were there and read. No issues, so it doesn't seem to be a "Windows 10 can't record CD-R discs" issue.

Personally, I've always hated the Windows burn solution as I found it unintuitive and finicky. I've also ran into the issue where I thought I burned and disc only to find it didn't take. Sure the disc reads on the PC it was burned from, but reading it on another player showed nothing there.

That said, make sure you finalize (close the disc) when burning contents to it otherwise it won't be read by other players.

    Thanks sygnus21,
I do finalize the discs and as I said I've had no problems until just recently. There is a possibility that it is the discs that are the problem. But I wanted to make sure microsoft hadn't changed things up on me before I tossed them. I know there is talk of making CDs and DVDs obsolete and I wondered if they weren't getting a jump on that. Although you described the issue I've run into. Thinking they are burned and then nothing there. In this instance it is with all computers not just others than the ones they are burned on.
I'll have to try the Roxio program. I tried the Nero program right after I got this machine and had some kind of compatibility problems. It crashed my system and I've been afraid to try any others.

I’ve used ImgBurn for a long time now and have never once had issues. Give it a try. It’s free , small and lightweight with a load of features.

No problem Linda. And no, CD's burners aren't going anywhere just yet, thus MS hasn't disabled any CD burning operations or implemented anything in the OS to disable any third party apps from doing so.

And yeah, perhaps it was a bad disc. Give it another try and see how it goes. If the issue persists you might look at the burner itself. Regarding Roxio, I'm still running NZT 2 which was released in 2013 and to be quite frank I'm surprised it still works under the current Win 10 OS. Anyway I only use it to burn music CD's.

All that said, unless you do a lot of CD burning, I probably wouldn't spend lot on a burn software.

    Good luck.

    sygnus21,
Well!!! I just down loaded Ashampoo's free burner, sorry ArazelEternal I'd already downloaded it by the time your reply showed up, and tried to burn another disc. It looks like all I'll need. At this point I believe it is the drive. After burning the disc and then checking it, it locked up my system and I had to do a hard shut down and disconnect it from my motherboard to get the computer to boot up again. I hope it didn't do any lasting damage, but everything appears to be working at this point.
Looks like I'm going to have to get a new DVD drive and go from there. Thanks guys for all your help.

You can't do that with DVD-R it is not a suitable type of disc.
You have to use the second option (with a CD/DVD player, mastered) assuming the Windows 10 way.

DVD-RW, DVD+RW, CD-RW can use the first option, Like a USB flash drive(Live File System). These discs are rewritable.

MS as usual uses it own terms which is confusing, and a useless link.

-R and +R are write once discs, you can write multi-sessions until the disc is full, one write and that is it.

Your old discs "I was able to burn onto some vintage DVD-RW discs I have" are RW and the others -R you see...
It is the type of Disc plus wrong burning method, not the burning application.

If you're referring to what I think, see:

    Packet writing - Wikipedia

It is allowed to use packet writing (which I believe means using it like a USB drive) with a write-once disk. The difference from an RW disk is that if you "erase" data, the space isn't recovered.

Haven't tried it in Windows 10. I haven't used packet writing at all for many years.

#12 That's not what I am referring to.
I said that from experience over about 17 years, and I still use optical discs.

Personally I found that packet writing (InCD, DirectCD, Windows Live File system) resulted in unreliable discs, long term.
So even with RW discs I used the simple standard write whole disc or multi-session. Then to re-use the disc erase the whole thing. Then of course write it again.
Very simple but effective in writing reliable discs R or RW variants.

Technically supposedly not the way to use RW discs as the wear is not evened out, but it has proved best for long term use in reality over maybe 15 years.

Well I did, that's for sure.
