Windows 10: Does Windows 10 use router MAC address to determine location?

I, like literally thousands of other people according to the locked threads I can't comment on, have a problem where I've moved across the country and all my Windows 10 devices without GPS hardware haven't figured it out. I have a friend with the same issue, and the common factor is we're each using the same router we used in the last State we lived in. Both of us are on new ISPs each ISP is regional - the one from my old house doesn't exist in my new State, and vice-versa.


The only thing I can figure is that, the first time Windows tries to get its location, it pulls it based on public IP, and then FOREVER ASSOCIATES IT WITH YOUR ROUTER'S MAC ADDRESS. It will never, ever, ever, under any circumstances, try to get its location again if it recognizes the router.


Case in point: When I lived in Louisiana I bought a new router. Windows got my location close enough 30' or so of my house. I moved to Tennessee, 500 miles away. I just checked Find My Device and it still shows the desktop I'm using to post this, which is on my desk in Tennessee, as being in Louisiana at my old house AS OF TODAY.


My Dell XPS 17, which has GPS, knows where it is. My Desktop, even though it doesn't have GPS, could find out where it was in a matter of milliseconds if it would just do a reverse lookup on it's own public IP. But because it recognizes the router, it will never, ever check. I even had to replace the motherboard in my desktop - I had to disable BitLocker, replace it with a different brand but same chipset, an re-enable BitLocker. New TPM and everything. Windows still can't be bothered to update the device's location, since it recognizes the router, even though the cable modem is different different brand, even, the ISP is different, and the ISP doesn't even operate in the same State it still thinks it's located in.


Anyone else think this is pathetic and would like to see Microsoft fix it?

Is it possible to asign MAC address to router ports?


To answer your question, yes you can. I don't know the Asus router to give you detailed instructions but what you are looking for is "MAC address whitelist"

Simply use: MAC Filter Mode: Accept, then add the netgear MAC address to the list. That should be it.

MAC address on Windows Phone 7 ?

How to find MAC address on WP7? Some Wifi networks use MAC address filtering and are hidden.

The only way is to connect to a router and see WP7 MAC and only if router allows to see a list of unregistered devices MAC addresses or have a log file.

Is there a way to get MAC address by just using the phone and not some third party device?
