Windows 10: Does Windows Defender include Anti ransomware?

Title says it all really.

BTW I am not asking how well it does it? Just if it does it or not?

Windows Defender is an Anti-Virus program and does not control the Windows firewall service.

 

Is Windows Defender the only anti virus program I need?

Are you suggesting that Defender in Win10 (and Win8) does not include an anti-virus component or are you suggesting that Defender in Win10 (and Win8) does not provide sufficient (adequate; comprehensive) protection?

 

Have a read of this article. I think what they're saying is that WD doesn't directly protect against ransomware but with the latest windows updates and WD you should be "reasonably" protected.

True, but the beta is free. One could call Malwarebytes (and the rest) a ransomware based on paranoia of infection.

Anyway the OP asked if WD did anti-ransomware (which I assume to mean looking for unusual behavior in any program rather than reacting to known threats in Ukrainian tax program software updates). The answer to that is (until fall update) no.

 

I think it is active ransomware protection only in the Pro (paid) version of 3.

 

If you have got cloud protection enabled, then it does.

Ms has stated Redmond update will have a built-in tool to stop ransomware were it will block anything writing to folders. They say win10 is secure against it if your up-to-date that is you can't get infected via the network which effected So if it gets on your system via other means it's another story

 

That can be done on any Windows using NTFS, setting folders to read-only and only allow admin to modify.
